What's Blue and White and Completely Unfinished? This Guest Bedroom!

When you suddenly have two bedrooms become empty, it's time to get busy! Here at home, I've been putting my heart and soul into two bedrooms - you saw this one the other day and today I'm sharing the blue and white room.

The blue and white room is actually coming together pretty easily but it is far from finished. The bed frame is one we've had for years. The hutch is an old family heirloom that we will always have. I'm not a huge lover of rooms full of antiques but I do think that something old should be in every room and if it reminds you of a loved one then it's all the more special.

The bedding is actually 4 or 5 years old.  We had it in a guest room that I called Spencer's room at the last house and it's just like new still. I love to use a white comforter on every bed. I love the way the white gives you a blank slate to work with and makes it so easy to switch things around when the urge hits.

Every bedroom needs a bedside table, a lamp, and something living. Right now the bedside table has these rich red coleuses that I clipped from a pot plant.

There isn't really room for a chair so I added this wonderful white bench at the end of the bed. A bench is great because it gives our guests a place to rest a suitcase.

The old hutch is filled with small things. I like that they are on view but are corralled in one place. A favorite photo of my boys when they were little, some faux flowers, and even an old pillow with a favorite Pooh saying are inside.

At first glance, the room could be called finished. However, it's missing layers. It's missing character builders and something amazing on the walls. It's missing the one thing that makes someone say, "Wow!" It's missing the perfect throw and a magazine or book holder. It's missing some special wall treatment behind the bed; possibly beadboard or a dark blue wall.

All rooms take time and searching for the just right pieces. I definitely still have some searching to do!  So I'm asking you, what do you think this room needs?

I'd love to hear what you think! :)

  1. Stacey love the blue and white theme you have started! Can not wait to see the room once you decided it is completed. I am not sure any of my rooms are ever truly completed. LOL.

  2. Beautiful room! Love everything from the pillows to the lampshade to the rug! And that beautiful hutch.

  3. That hutch is amazing but I am with you, you need a wow factor piece or two. A large piece of art or metal between the two doors, again an accent wall or one wall in subtle wall paper. Whatever you choose, I have no outback it’ll be gorgeous!

  4. Hi Stacey! Congrats (and tears) being an empty nest-er. That's a very big landmark thing.

As for your rooms - whoo hoo - gorgeous!

I think you hit it on the head - I think one "accent" wall in blue would be fantastic. And some wall art - be picky and patient to find the right art. I will keep my peepers open for you as well.

I love your bench - it's calling for perhaps a colorful long thing cushion on top? Your visitors "bums" will be happy for it, I am sure.

As for now having more guest rooms, I think I need to book a flight and get over to visit you one of these years. : - )

    Hugs. ♥

  5. I’d fold a quilt on the bench and probably add a basket or piece of pottery on the top of the antique, next to the books. It’s a beautiful room....I love the soothing colors.

  6. Such a fun project!! I don’t know what I’ll do one day when my boys grow up and move out! Right now, while they are still young, I wish I had a little more free time, but I’m sure one day when they’re gone, I will desperately miss them!
Loving that rug so much!! Blue is my absolute favorite color!!!

  7. A gorgeous room, Stacey, I love your attention to detail. And do get what you mean by unfinished - I also like to tinker and tinker well after everyone else writes the project off as done :-)

  9. Love the room! What a fresh idea, for me at least, to use the china cabinet in the bedroom. We inherited a dining room set from Tim's great aunt 20 years ago and the look is almost identical to that, certainly the same time period. We talked about getting rid of the whole thing when we downsize soon, but now I am rethinking that! Thank you for the great post! :)

  10. Love the blue and white together Stacey. The bedding the lamp the side table it all goes so great together. I love the hutch in there too. Maybe a nice big mirror on that one wall would be pretty. I know you will pull it all together. Maybe a trip to your Goodwill or resale shops and you will find some great things for the walls. Happy New Week.

  13. The room is lovely. I would take my time and add slowly starting with a blue throw on the bed. I just love blue. Such a wonderful color. I think Stacey will know when it has hit that just right mark. Those shoes are so cute too.

  14. Hi Stacey, I love the way you have blended the colors and unique furniture pieces together to make a warm and cozy room. Your hutch piece is beautiful. I have a few antiques passed down from my family and I treasure them so much. They add a sense of connection that carries on throughout time. Thanks for sharing your lovely home.

    1. Thank you so much Lynda. I love the way you described the "connection that carries on throughout time". That's exactly what this hutch is about! The piece belonged to my husband's grandmother. There was a whole dining room set but we only had space for this. So glad we have it!

  15. Stacey, This is a beautiful room! I love the bed, the lamp shade, the rug... It's lovely as it is. Now, I think you know me, I would add some wood on the walls. :D Maybe a grid/ b&b on the feature wall?

  16. You are off to an amazing start! A gallery wall behind the bed could be so pretty. I have had the best time searching for art to create mine in our office! You can mix vintage and new pieces, and one of my fave budget tricks is to create your own art with the Waterlogue app! You have so many beautiful photos that you could use. Another thing I keep reading about is architect prints from the office supply stores. It all sounds fun! Your room is looking great :)

  17. The room is pretty and is coming together nicely. Maybe an accent wall and then see about the "statement" pieces. Love and hugs!

  18. Stacey, I have a blue and white guest room that isn’t finished. Just taking my time and finding what I really love. However you layer and finish the bedroom, stay true to what you love and it will always make you happy!

  19. I think this room is coming along great! You gave me a good idea with the bench at the foot of the bed. I'm going to be decorating a guest room soon too and was wondering if I would have room for a chair. The bench is a great alternative!

  20. Stacey, you have such a great eye for design. This room is beautiful, too. I would maybe add a large mirror on that wall...or a picture. I don't know. I think it's one of those things where you'll see something in the store and just know! Can't wait for it..

  21. Stacey the room looks great! I do agree it takes time sometimes to put it all together, but I think that can be a fun thing! Everyone has made some good suggestions, I would maybe put up a mirror somewhere. I also love the antique piece which would be fun to change out the inside seasonally. I look forward to seeing what you do with this space! Have fun! ;)

  22. Maybe two more pieces of art work or a larger piece over the bed? Maybe a mirror on the empty wall so guests can check themselves out? Whatever you do will look beautiful I'm sure of it! Heck, I'll come stay there without you having to do anything else!

  23. I just went to visit some cousins of mine and i missed a mirror in the room and a chair to sit and tie your shoes. I love your room and would love to visit and stay here, it will be fine whatever you put in there, they will love.

  25. This is looking lovely, Stacey! I know just what you mean about the layers...we are at that stage at the lakehouse now. Everything is there, but now I have to bring in the special things and put my personality into it. It takes awhile though, and I think happens over time. I wish I could snap my fingers and be done, but it will get there.

  27. Your guest room looks nice and clean, fresh. The only thing I might suggest for that wall, since you love your garden, would be a set of botanicals, simply framed in inexpensive black frames, in some sort of arrangement. That said, I'm sure inspiration will come in due time.

  28. The room looks wonderful. I especially like the hutch- it’s a beautiful piece. My initial feelings about your request for ideas to finish the room is that it needs some art. A transome window/mirror might be nice above the bed. It reflects light and creates the feeling of another window. Enjoy- I love this kind of project!

  29. Your room is beautiful. All it needs is a large piece of art over the bed and move the smaller piece somewhere else in the room. I LOVE your beautiful cabinet! It's a shame that it's in a guest bedroom and no one sees it. Keep the door open so that people can see it when they're being looky-loos!

  30. Such a beautiful guest room. I love the blue and white. I would add a big mirror for your guests to use. Your guests are so lucky to stay in such a beautiful room.

  32. I think you will like a wall treatment like the shiplap wall in your other house. Beadboard is always a good idea. It's so classic. I can't wait to see what you do with it. I love the blue and white.

  34. I think it needs a guest! (I'll be there in a heartbeat!)

Seriously, I think you're pretty close. It's inviting and lovely. It has personality and I love the bench. Yes, the perfect bookcase might be nice. And I LOVE the idea of the deeper blue wall. Actually, I think that might be IT. (Oh, and good not too many throw pillows. I love a few like you have but go nuts when there are SO many pillows there is no place to put them or set them right when you remake the bed!)

  35. What a lovely space! Love the hutch and white bench!

Oh, I'm sure you'll find some lovely pieces to add to the room.... Beautiful artwork on the walls, or a shelf. Maybe, even some Christmas decorations! That would really brighten the space up!

That sweet picture in the hutch of the boys with the dog caught my eye right away! How precious! What a treasured memento to have displayed! Family photos always make a room feel warm and welcoming!

    Blessings! Net

  36. I love classic blue and white too. White bedding is so comforting and I do agree an antique that has special meaning really makes a home. How about some art work for you room. I love pretty paintings and switch them around in my house, I drive my husband crazy!! Thanks for the post!

  37. Your room may not be finished, but it sure is coming together beautifully! I love Blue and white together, and I totally agree with you about antiques. It's so nice when they remind us of someone special. Thank you for sharing, and for being a part of the Hearth and Soul Link Party. Hope to see you again this week. Hope you have had a lovely weekend!
