The Next Best Room In Our House

Happy Monday Friends!

I'm going to have to start asking here on the blog as I often do in real life, "Did I already tell you this?" It seems like I'm constantly prefacing a conversation that way or stopping in the middle of a conversation to ask that question. Do you do that too? Please say yes.

You may or may not know that our son moved out a few weeks ago to begin his career as an RN. He has his own apartment in Dallas - thankfully only about 25 minutes away. Now we have the two rooms that he had been occupying to outfit and decorate for future use.

What's a mom of two sons to do? I'm making one of the rooms on the feminine side with some fun ideas in mind. Well let me be honest, all of the decorating I do is on the feminine side. That's my choice and I'm sticking to it.

The story of this room began about six weeks ago when I decided that since we have four bedrooms, I would design this room with a daybed. I would like to have space in this room to pop up a card table for crafting or other creative pursuits. The desire to be crafty gnaws at me but this obsessively neat girl needs a door to close on the mess! Now this will be the best of both worlds! Don't you think? With a bed, we can still have a guest sleep here if needed or I can get messy in here when I want to and then walk away.

So I need to tell you about purchasing the bed. Remember when I told you about meeting J. through Craig's List? I had been researching daybeds online and fell in love with the Louis Daybed from Ballard Designs. Just on a whim, I searched Craig's List and found it right here in my town only a few miles away. J. had purchased the beautiful daybed to use in her living room but it turned out to be too big. She only had the bed for two weeks! She sold us the daybed, the twin mattress, and the custom-made linen cover for a more than reasonable price. When I brought the bed home I realized it had a yellowish tint that just didn't work with our wall paint color, Sherwin Williams Eider White. A couple of quick coats of Annie Sloan Pure White made the paint perfect.

This room is still very much a work in progress. I've been poofing beautiful pillows, going through my stashes for the perfect accessories, and now I'm off to look for the perfect rug.

Like other rooms we've worked on before, I stand and stare at this one. The colors - pink, taupe, soft green, and gold are slightly different than the rest of the house. The room is feminine and inviting already even though it's far from finished.

Home projects ease the sting of kids moving out. I'm sure glad to have this project right now! Stick with me and I'll show more progress soon. :)

  4. I like your daybed, Stacey - a lot. I have one but it seems to sit too high, and I'm not sure if it'll be a keeper or not, but I really like the versatility (requirement #1). Ours has a trundle mattress beneath, and that may be why it sits higher but, again, with the two twin mattresses (which are still like new, rarely used), it can pop up easily to make a king bed. You will enjoy the option of floor space for crafting or anything else in that room.

    1. Penny, I have had that ottoman for 10 years or so! My plan was to get rid of it but it was sitting in this room while I was puttering and I realized it was perfect! So glad to be keeping it.

  6. I've always wanted a day bed or one of the beds in a window. I have photos I've pulled out of magazines over the years with these. Just looks like a great place for a lady to relax!

  7. Good Morning Stacey. Congrats to your son becoming an RN. With me being an RN I can say he is going to love his career. So fulfilling to help those in need. RN's have so many options now as to where they would love to work. I love that so many young men are beginning to start their careers in a long time female dominated field. The day bed is gorgeous and I Love the flower decor above it on the wall. So pretty. Happy New Week.
    Hugs,
    Kris

  12. Congrats to your son on beginning a new chapter in his life.

Exciting to create a room all to yourself. Love the daybed. Isn't Old White the best color? I seem to use it often for washes over other colors of chalk paint.

I will enjoy following the process of your room coming along.

I enjoy having my own office in this home. I will reveal it after the great room.

    Enjoy your day

  15. Even with all the empty bedrooms we have, I can't seem to get one like I want - feminine and beautiful like yours AND a place to do crafts. The hubby has one but I'm left out. Totally jealous of that lovely room!

  16. I am in love with your daybed. Our daughter moved back in with us for just a short time. We moved her over the weekend into her own place. I need to get my house back in order and the first thing now I want to do is to change it up. You have inspired me!

  25. I love your new room. One of the biggest blessings has been my little "sewing room." When I retired I was pinning ideas for my cluttered office/craft room. My daughter noticed and put a bug in her dad's ear. Hence, new cabinets, built in desk, and craft counter made for my perfect little spot to go and have fun. It is decorated with all my favorite things. You are going to love this spot. I bet you just spend time in the room soaking up the feminine decor.

  31. I love daybeds and this one is beautiful! Congrats to your son! My oldest is moving out too and I'm going to have a new room to decorate. I'm thinking of doing something feminine as well, since I had all boys and never got to decorate a girls room. :)

  32. The room looks beautiful! I love the daybed! Our son moved out about 18 months ago, and while we keep his room as it is for when he visits, it also doubles as a second guest room. We are going to convert his study to a guest room with a pull out sofa. Our current guest room is becoming my dressing room. It does help ease the sting of kids moving out! Thank you for sharing, and for being a part of the Hearth and Soul Link Party. Hope you are having a great weekend!
