Summer Lovin' - Fried Green Tomatoes and Cream Peas

There's nothing better than waking up on a summer morning and
heading down to the local farmer's market.
That's what we did yesterday and we found just what we were looking for!

Our mission was to find cream peas.
Do you eat cream peas?
They are tiny little green peas similar to black eyeds but with
a really mild taste.

We found the peas and moved on down the line only to find
the prettiest green tomatoes you've ever seen.
The idea for the perfect summer supper was born!

Fried green tomatoes, cream peas, and corn bread.

I'm not big on frying but these were so worth it.
I used this recipe which was chosen because it included corn meal.
We love the texture the corn meal gives food.

Is your mouth watering yet?
Fortunately, my hubby and I both grew up eating good
home cooking like this.

No gourmet here.
Just great food.

What is the perfect summer supper to you?

  5. Can you believe that I have never had fried green tomatoes? That sentence has "northerner" written all over it, doesn't it! ;) I must say that they do look delicious...maybe someday!

  6. Oh of my favorite things in life is fried green Mom and I love getting them in a certain little restaurant in Florida...oh I'm hungry for them now! You meal looks so good! Don't you enjoy farmer's markets! We went out and picked peaches in Harrah today..I never new there was an orchard there! Happy Summer!

    p.s. Pretty plates!

  11. We are about as southern as you get, and I have never heard of that type of peas. But those fried green tomatoes...oh my! I posted a sandwich recipe with FGT just the other day. Stop by and check it out when you have a second. It just doesn't get any better than southern cooking. Gonna check the peas out... we normally do purple hulls.

  12. I have never had cream peas. They sound great. I love fried green tomatoes.

Corn on the cob and a grilled burger is my perfect summer time meal. It will be corn season here in a few more weeks.

  13. I am starving and this looks so good! I've never heard of cream peas either. Something new to try. Love cornbread!

  14. I love a plain old tomato sandwich with mayo and salt&pepper. That's my favorite summertime meal, but fresh corn on the cob is a close second. :)

  15. I can't get on board with the peas (I couldn't even feed them to my boys when they were babies because I would gag..never have liked!) But, I LOVE tomatoes (in any form) and cornbread is a staple around here. :) I love that you used corn meal in the fried tomatoes too. I also love the texture. Yum!!

  16. Hi Stacey! Oh, that's my kind of eatin'! My mother used to fry up fried green tomatoes. I never could make them as good as she did. How exciting life is about to be! If you come to visit your friend, let me know and I'll meet you somewhere and hug your tiny neck!
Thanks for popping in to see me.
    Be a sweetie,
    Shelia ;)

  17. I have never heard of cream peas, but I did have fried green tomatoes once when I was a kid. I have to admit I prefer my tomatoes red and sweet, with fresh sweet corn and grilled hot bread spread with pesto :>)

  18. I've only made fried green tomatoes once, but I thought they were awful tasty. Yours looks delish! Good home cookin, is what I grew up on too. My mom fried zucchini with egg and lots of S&P, and butter. YUM! Made some the other night.

  19. This sounds like a traditional southern meal. I had fried green tomatoes in a restaurant once and I really liked them. And cream peas...never heard of them...wondering if you have a recipe? The pictures make everything look mouth watering!!

  20. Yes, my mouth is watering. We have been blessed with scrumptious ripe tomatoes this year but haven't had the first fried green tomato!!!!

  21. Fried green tomatoes are something I've only eaten once, but I was actually thinking about making them the other day after reading a recipe in a magazine. I think if I can find them that's exactly what I'm going to do! Looking at your pics have really got my juices flowing ;).

I'm stopping by for the first time Stacey. Don't know what took me so long! Seems like we have lots in common and many mutual blog buds. You have a lovely, colorful blog and I've enjoyed having a look around!

  22. Love fried green tomatoes and your simple meal sounds delicious.
Thanks for sharing. Will try your method.
