Blogging Thoughts and a Question: Edited Saturday Morning

In a perfect world, I would understand all the ins and outs of blogging and computers. However, I'm just always a step behind when it comes to the computer skills part. So, I'd like to take this opportunity to ask a question and tell you my opinion about something. :)

-Is it possible to change the text size on the sidebars but leave the text size in the main area a different size? In other words, I want the sidebar fonts to be smaller than the center.

-I really love it when blogs have Categories somewhere that can be clicked on. Sometimes I love to just sit and look at Decorating..sometimes I love to just look at Recipes. Anywhere you want to put them is great. That's my humble opinion.
Edited to Add: Several people have stated that they aren't sure how to add Categories. When you are writing a new post there is a rectangle down in the bottom right corner of the box that is for labels. You can label the post there each time....decorating, recipes, holidays, etc. Post for the day. You also need to Add a Gadget called Labels. The Blogger program will automatically identify each post and put it in that category for you. This way when someone visits you they can click on a category and look at all the posts that you've done pertaining to a specific subject. Is that as clear as mud?

Hope y'all have a wonderful weekend.

  1. I am not aware of a way to make the sidebar font a smaller size. I have heard of something called windows live writer that might help but I haven't checked it out yet. I really need to overhaul my blog and do some of the categories, update my favorites and so many other things. Hopefully soon!

  2. I don't know the answer to the text problem either...

I need to add categories to my blog - when I started blogging I guess I wasn't sure what categories I would have. I'm still figuring out what my "voice" is. But your suggestion is a good one!

  3. Good answers. I wish I was a blog designer! It has become more clear daily that the advantages of knowing the ins and outs of blog design sure would be useful!!! Hope you find the answers!

  4. I am still learning, too and have started trying to make my blog favorites into categories. It's a little hard to decide where they should fit though! My question right now is how to make a neat Book list. I want to list the books I've read and I need to check the gadgets and find out how to do that. It's fun though, isn't it? Enjoy your day!

  5. I am a total computer klutz, Stacey. In fact, I tried to use a differnt font for a post and it never came out that way. And categories, if anyone can explain to me how to do that I would love it!

  6. Stacey I'm so bad at computer stuff I have no idea. I had my layout and design done by Amber at "The Shabbee Chick".

I tried to add "catergories" to mine as well and it wouldn't work. I think I have to have Amber do it for me. I do like the idea alot.

  7. Go to dashboard.
    Go to layout.
    Go to fonts and colors.

On the left side there will be a drop down menu, look for sidebar fonts, click on it.

There will be a place there that will allow you to say smaller or larger font size.

Warning: I've done this, and am not happy with the results. It seemed to me that once I tried to adjust all my heading/sidebar fonts, it messed other things up. But I tried it, so go ahead and try it too.

About the buttons to catagorize - - - some of us just don't know HOW to do that, and I think some blog programs do it more easily than others. (Those who use the blogging program on MAC seem to have those capabilities more than those of us on Blogger)

There are some frustrations about getting our blogs fonts and all to LOOK like we picture them in our head - - - but all in all, even in spite of THOSE issues - - - ISN'T BLOGGING THE BEST!?!

  8. I think that is a brillant idea...sorry, haven't a clue how to do it. I can do so much more now than when I started blogging, but I still am scared to change too much...I am afraid it will all go bye bye!!

  9. I am still learning too, but I just experiment and and I don't save any change unless I like the results that way it all goes back to what it was before I "messed it up" :)

  10. GO HORNS*!!!!!!! (sorry, I couldn't help myself) *GRIN*

  11. Thanks Stacey!
Hope you have a great weekend!
You have read my mind...I have been wondering how to put categories/labels on my blog..I'm also trying to figure out why some of my pictures will enlarge when I click on them and other's won't...oh please give me so more blogging tips! Sonia/Miss Bloomers

  12. For the life of me, I cannot figure out how some folks can have three columns on their pages. None of the templates I've seen even have three!
The last time I even tried to play around with the templates, I lost all of my posts so, as you would imagine, I am afraid to touch the silly thing again.
Very frustrating, to say the least.

  13. Hi Stacey,

Are you talking about the sidebar text? I see a place in Layout/Fonts&Colors where you can change the sidebar title, but not the sidebar text. I'm sure there is a way to change it. I've changed my font sizes in the HTML by adjusting the % - for example, changing 100% to 150%. Question is whether or not Blogger makes BOTH the post text and sidebar text the same size via CSS. ???

I am more than happy to play (mess up) my own blog, but cannot offer specific help w/ yours. Probably the best thing would be to post a question to the Blogger techs and perhaps they could supply the code you need?

I use categories and have limited them to basic topics that I blog about. I get REALLY confused when there are huge category lists w/ just one or two posts.

Sorry for the looooong comment. Have a great weekend!

  14. Sounds like Keetha answered your questions. Good thing someone knows what they're doing! Labels is a good idea. I'll have to try to figure that out. As soon as I have lots of time.

  15. Hi Stacey! The only way I was able to change the size of the text on my sidebar was to edit the "HTML" code! Under the "variable" information at the top of the code section you'll see "variable name...sidebar text font....default % I changed mine from 100% to 75%. I'm always playing with the code BUT be careful because it is easy to mess things up especially if you forget what you did. You have to save changes each time you make a change too! Maybe someone knows of another way I haven't had any luck using the Fonts and Color in the customize section. It only allowed me to change title that way! Again, be careful!!! - Jeannette

  16. Stacey, Anytime I want to try something new on my template, I use my test blog. Then I am not messing with the real one while someone is trying to read it. And I don't screw it up, either. You can make your test blog private so that no one else can see it, too.
My suggestion is to set one up for yourself.
I've played with some html codes, but haven't attempted changing font size in the side bar for text. Blogger has a default, I think, for the text size in both the post side and the sidebar side. Maybe that will be a project for me to attempt some rainy day!

  17. I'm still trying to get his blogging thing figures out myself, but I did find some great articles on other people's blogs this morning. You can find all these blogs in my sidebar. Between Naps on the Porch has 'Blogging Secrets'. Funky Junk Interiors has Blogger How-tos (click on the checkerboard in her sidebar).Rhoda at Southern Hospitality has '10 Tips for New Bloggers'. And Sweet cheeky Designs has tips on their blog from time to time. I found all of the above mentioned articles VERY informative and enlightening, and they all explain how to do things in easy to understand terms.

  18. I can barely turn my computer on and off, Stacey, so I can;t help much. Sorry...
I just downloaded Windows Live Writer so I can have all the neat fonts but....can't figure out how to post with it. I started a test blog to play around with...maybe you could do the same...

  19. Stacey,

Just finished catching up on all your blogs. I think I was only three months behind! Computer technology is definitely not in my field of expertise.

Loved your pics and info. So glad to hear from you.

    Love ya,

  20. Hmm? I had been wondering how to make labels on my blog. I use Windows Live Writer and really don't know if I can have labels. I'll make sure to notice next time I make a post. *blush*

  21. Stacey,

I don't know how much HTML you can use in your Blog but check out the page Changing the
Font Size is one of the easier things to do - if Google Blog will let you.

This site will teach you anything you need to know for free...

    Your brother...

  22. I'm not very good with this stuff either. And afraid to change much for fear of losing what I have! I need to check my categories, because I think I have me some cleaning up to do on it!

  23. Hi Stacy,

Goodness- I wish I could help you with your question. I bought Blogging for Bliss, which has lots of great information, however, I did not see anyting about the sidebar issue you have.
    Good luck.

  24. Stacey, I love the labels on blogs. Saves so much time and digging.

    Barb ♥

  25. Wish I could help, but I have no clue about these things. Last week I deleted an important side bar graphic link while callin myself making improvements..LOL SO, this gal has no help for you.
I'm sure you'll find it though. Good luck.

OH...the salt and pepper shakers you ask about...I use to sell them and just MIGHT have another set somewhere, if you'r interested. I love those too.

  26. I have no idea how to change the text. And completely agree that the categories are the only way to go.

Love how you spent your rainy day.

  27. I learned a lot reading the comments! I need to practice on a test blog! Great idea!

  28. I am reading Blogging for bliss. I have been blogging about 18 months and if I had read it before now nothing would have made since, but now I at least know what they are talking about and it has helped at lot. I got it at the library. The test blog is good.
