We've Been Having a Visitor!

Look closely in the pictures...he's well camouflaged. This Red-tailed Hawk has been coming to sit above our pond for several days in a row. He's so majestic. He's probably a foot tall.

I know that he can see the goldfish very well because they are large. So far, we've not seen him trying to fish. He's definitely interested though. He sits for long periods of time watching everything around him.

Red-tails usually perch over wide open spaces. Maybe this one is just attracted to the water. We often have visiting birds in the waterfall.

Here's a story ...each summer we attend the Oklahoma City Garden Pond Society tours. People open their backyards for tours of ponds and gardens. One man had a pond that was too shallow. He told us that he came out one day and there were fish on his roof!!

I guess it is a food chain...

Hope you all have a wonderful weekend.

By the way, take note of two upcoming events:

Kari & Kijsa's Pillow Parade Finale on Tuesday

Rhoda at Southern Hospitality is hosting a Spring Fluffing Party on Wednesday

  1. So do you think he's going to swoop in and fish? We have a falcon that sits in our yard. When he comes around the whole back yard gets still and quiet. ~ Robyn

  2. We have had three flying around our property for the last week...I'm hoping they want to nest in one of our tall pine trees. We had a pair that nested in a dead pine tree years ago but the tree fell and that pair hasn't been back. I love hearing them.

  3. That hawk is gorgeous! I could sit and watch birds like that for hours on end!

  4. I love that watching birds causes us to slow down a little bit and just be still and enjoy! Cool to see him this morning!

  5. What a majestic sight, Stacey! I wish they would come visit my small pond, but I'm probably too close to a highway...

  6. When I opened my bedroom blind a hawk was sitting in the tree outside the window. I was on the phone at the time and was also running for my camera. Darn - too late. I'm glad you had better photography success as they really are an amazing sight in the backyard.

  7. You got a GREAT picture of the red tailed hawk. We have found two feathers in the yard recently from one. They are just so BIG! I bet he is going to go fishing soon!

  8. Stacey, I am impressed that you took that great close up of the Red-tailed Hawk. What an impressive looking bird. I would love to see one in real life. Do you have a real good camera, or where you actually close to the hawk?

  9. Wow! Great picture! Watch out...we used to have a pond and if we didn't have one of those fake owls sitting somewhere nearby, we would lose our fish all the time. Yep, I am sure that this hawk sees your goldfish very well and will be diving in at some point.

    Great picture of him though!

I hope that you're enjoying your weekend!

  10. Stacey--

Thank you so much for your words of encouragement; they really mean a lot to me during this time. It's getting better..slowly but surely.
Hope you have a great weekend!

  11. JUST today, a Cooper's Hawk swooped out of a tree in my backyard after a cardinal. (my kids were watching too, out my huge bay window in the family room)
The Cardinal HIT our window, went down and the Hawk snached it. My kids were wide eyed...little man said, "well, guess we won't be seeing that cardinal. Look mama at the feathers on the window." Many were stuck...it was awful to witness the circle of life.

    But I still love nature...

  12. Oh my, keep the camera nearby and "shoot" him while fishing.
-fish on the roof- TOO FUNNY!

  13. Hi Stacey! Oh, that hawk is a beauty! Don't know if I've ever seen a red tailed one before! I don't know my hawks! I'm sure you enjoy seeing all of the beautiful birds that come to visit you. My daughter and her husband are birders and they really get into looking at the birds! I think I'd like that too!
    Be a sweetie,
    Shelia ;)

  14. Great picture. The other day, a male and female cardinal were sitting on the pool cover taking a bath. I ran to get a picture but they were gone when I got back.

I hope he doesn't get after the goldfish.

    Thanks for the updates.

  15. We see these occasionally in our backyard, too. They're so noble and beautiful, aren't they. That's very interesting about the fish on the roof - now that would be a sight to see!

  16. Oh my, he is pretty! Since we've moved to North Ga we see these guys all the time. I like to keep a close eye on my cats and kids! Their wing span (and claws) are quite scary!
