We've Made it Our Own - Family Room Feature Wall

I spend a lot of time in the kitchen and this is my view from the sink.
Yesterday I had the sudden epiphany that I haven't fully appreciated what
we've done to this feature wall.

It is my personal habit to look around our house and see the things that need to be done or are imperfect. Do you do that too?

Yesterday I had the WOW moment and realized it's not perfect but it sure is pretty. :)

To this wall we added the built in cabinets and shelves above.
That project was professionally completed by a local craftsman.
We also planked above the fireplace with a DIY project.
We've really made this wall our own by doing these things.

Want to see what it looked like before?
This is the picture we took on the day we were house shopping.
The same wall - big difference, isn't it?

I'm appreciating my view right now. Are you?
Look around and see the beauty you've created in your home.
Whether it's big or little...it's there.

A Houseplant That Lives - I Promise!

Are you like me and struggle with houseplants?

Have you bought ivy after ivy and they died slow deaths?
Do beautiful topiaries mock you as you walk past?

Me too!!

Chinese Evergreen - A houseplant that lives at Poofing the Pillows.

Let me share this plant with you that I've had over a year.
This is called a Chinese Evergreen.
I received this as a gift a little over a year ago and truth be told,
I cringed when it arrived because of my track record with indoor plants.

Let's just say that if houseplants had legs they'd run from me!

This sweet little baby is upstairs in a room that we rarely go in (unfortunately) but the light is great.
How do I care for this verdant green beauty?

I ignore it mostly. I water it when it wilts and I dust it.
That's it!
Apparently if you fertilize it occasionally it will bloom but that's too much trouble.

If adding houseplants to your home is on your to do list go find a Chinese Evergreen.

Where'd You Go, Bernadette?

Where'd You Go, Bernadette?

A very funny thing happened before I read this book and it was a lesson learned!

Where'd You Go, Bernadette was the latest selection of the book club I'm in with some friends.
I read several reviews of this book before I actually read the book and then realized later that was the wrong thing to do. Has this ever happened to you?   I'll explain more in a second...

Bernadette is a mom with a little too much life going on. She's a brilliant architect although she hasn't practiced her art/trade in years. She's a fantastic mom but she runs away. She's in love with her husband but they hardly speak. She lives in a neighborhood but doesn't get along with any neighbors or have any friends, for that matter.

This is a quick read written in the form of notes, emails, and letters. It's funny and frustrating all at the same time. Bernadette's daughter Bee definitely was my favorite character and I bet she'd be yours too.

Here's where the mistake came in...
one of the reviews I read of this book referred to Bernadette as agoraphobic so I entered the story with preconceived ideas about her. The rest of the girls in my book club never crossed that word and saw the story through completely different eyes. Isn't that interesting? Maybe we shouldn't read reviews....

I'd love for you to read it and then come tell me what you thought.
We all liked the book and it's going to be a movie. :)

A Wonderful New Sign in the Kitchen

Have you ever thought about how many hours you spend in the kitchen?
Cooking, serving, wiping the counters, making coffee and sharing it with someone special.
Those day-to-day moments really do add up to a lifetime.
My kitchen is my favorite place in the house.

Refreshing the kitchen for a new year with touches of red and robin's egg blue and a beautiful new sign.

I love to add a new cup towel to the mix or a move around a sugar bowl.
Those projects make me happy.  Little things, you know.

A couple of months ago I was visiting another blog, Gracie Blue,
when low and behold she had a new sign with the words I love so much!
She shared the source from Etsy and with lightning speed I told my husband that
that sign was what I wanted for Christmas.

Do you do that?
Well sure you do. It's what girls do. :)

January kitchen refresh with touches of red and robin's egg blue. A beautiful new sign hangs on the wall reminding us to remember special things in the world.

The sign came right before Christmas and we just happened to have the perfect
spot for it in the kitchen.

Can I tell you how much I love this sign?
Our sign is made to perfection and came packaged perfectly and quickly.

Family Room Refresh for the New Year

Good Morning Friends.
What are you up to today?
I'm working on a little family room refreshing for the new year.

Above the mantel artwork by Emily Jeffords at Poofing the Pillows.

I know that some of you are socked in by a long snowy winter.
We are having an unusually beautiful winter and truth be told,
some days it feels like spring already. They say the cold and rain is coming
though so let's all just look at this beautiful blue sky. :)

I've shared before that I try to change out the artwork above the fireplace several times per year.
I recently spotted the Instagram feed of Emily Jeffords and was instantly taken with her beautiful work. Fortunately, she sells prints so this one came to me. :)

What you see above is just a little peek of the art because the sunny glare and my camera aren't getting along today.

There's also some lamp shuffling going on...a cute pillow that Santa brought me...and
a few other things that make me smile.

What goes into a room refresh for you?
Of course, the main things all stay but little things get moved around and it all feels new.

Today I'm off to meet Jemma of At Home with Jemma and Eilis of My Heart Lives Here for lunch.
Woo hoo!!

Happy Friday to you.

Goal Keeping: Exercise

Me at Zumba

I know, you have 'Exercise More' on your goal list for 2016.
Right?
Oooh, I could bet money on that one and be the big winner! :)

Two years ago that was on my list too.
Guess what...this one was a success!
I posted a little bit about it back in January 2014 when my girlfriend and I began Zumba classes at our community center here in town.
We are still at it and having the best time.

It's hard! We sweat and look much more like Napoleon than sexy
cheerleaders but it's so much fun.

Music, dancing, and laughing with friends.
What more could you want from sweating?

If exercising is on your list of wonderful things to do in 2016, visit Zumba.
I Love It!!

Check out the Poofing the Pillows Facebook page to see a video of my teacher Chely in action.
I'd love for you to follow me there.

Now if you are thinking about Zumba don't be intimidated.
You can take it at your own pace and even after all this time my booty still
doesn't shake like it's supposed to. :)

Have fun with your goals and you are more likely to stick to them!

A Wonderful Sign and Blog Talking

We have two or three signs in our house that have the word wonderful on them.
I guess I've liked that word for a long time.
This sign is definitely my favorite and it hangs in our grown son's room.
He doesn't live here but I like to think of it as his room anyway.
I've been asked a couple of times lately where this came from.
I ordered it from Between You & Me.  You can get yours too. :)

Now can we talk about blogging for just a sec?

I was informed recently that Google Friends is making changes and that you may not be updated about blog posts any longer if that is the way you follow Poofing the Pillows.

Consider following by Email.

Would you please consider following by email or on Bloglovin?
You may have some other method you use and that's fine...just don't want to lose anyone.

The email sign up is right over there on the sidebar.

Also, I really do try to answer your comments but often times your messages are No Reply Emails.
When that happens, I can't find you. Sorry.
