Ready - Set - Go!

Remember a few weeks back when I told you our house was on the market?
We are under contract now and the packing is well underway!   We are so excited!!
We've only lived in this house 4 1/2 years so we are feeling a little like serial movers.
We aren't serial movers at all we just need to move to the right house.  That's all. :)
This house was not a mistake but it's not what we need either.  So what are we doing?
A bunch of you have asked that question in emails so I'll explain.

Our current house is two stories and we want one story. We love to be outside and we love to garden. I think I've said before that gardening is our love language. So, we are moving to a spot with an acre and a half to garden. We'll have more room for butterfly gardens and maybe some veggies too. We definitely want to build a pond again because we love them!!
We are building right next door to a sweet friend.  The new house design has already been drawn and we meet with the builder this week to get things underway.   We'll be moving to a rent house in a few days and be there while we build.

This is a real adventure for us so I hope you'll follow along. Our hope is to create the home we will live in until they cart us to the retirement center.  We welcome your advice and great ideas.
Here's my first question for you...
Would you ever have a wood floor in your kitchen?
Why or why not?
Happy Halloween to you and all the trick or treaters.

Congrats - you must be beaming with excitement. My goodness you could have a natural pond now, one where ducks and geese could stop by and visit. Looking forward to your journey.

How exciting! I look forward to seeing the new home and gardens and all the beautiful touches you will add to them :) I have a wood floor in the kitchen right now and I would absolutely do it again. I would not use laminate, I just question whether it would be durable enough, but wood floors are a nice resilient surface and aren't hard on my feet and legs like harder surfaces would be. The only thing you have to consider is water damage, which can happen if your dishwasher or plumbing leaks.

I am already imagining your beautiful garden. I know it is a long way off, but you must be so excited.

We do have wood floors in our kitchen. We found the original hardwoods from circa 1885 when we pulled up the layers of flooring during the kitchen remodel. We refinished them, and I love them. I have no complaints.

I would hesitate to put new hardwood products in a kitchen because they are just not the same as the hardwood floors of the past despite their claims to the contrary. Top of the line new hardwood floors are great, but the cost can be prohibitive. Before we found the floors, we were planning on using Cali Bamboo. It has really high reviews. It looks like hardwood, but it is very durable. It might be worth a look. I was so impressed. We were looking at the higher-end line.

I love hardwood in the Kitchen and your builder has access to real solid oak hardwood. However, having said that we did not put hardwood in our less than one year old new home kitchen. Here is why-we have a wonderful big old family with lots of kids and I just didn't want to have worry about the kitchen floor! Those littles can drip ice-cream and spill red kool-aid all they want in the kitchen:) Hardwoods everywhere else though except for the baths.
Dave saw 5 Monarchs on one of your wild plants on you lot yesterday, he even took a photo!

Stacey, I am so happy for y'all and super jealous you'll be next door to Jemma!! Seriously????!!!

In my excitement, I totally forgot to answer your question. Yes, we've had them for 24 years now and love them. They are just now to the point of needing refinishing. We've raised two kids here and have always had dogs. With that said, the new tile that looks like wood (swoon) was not available back then. My only fear with that is it might be a bit colder in the winter months and I am NOT a fan of rugs in a kitchen due to maintenance.

Hi Stacey, This is such an exciting time for you and your family. I understand moving too well and finding the right house. Looks like you will have a dream neighbor!!! How special.
We did have real wood oak floors in our kitchen when we moved here 20 years ago. It was gorgeous till one day, the fridge ice maker leaked and we weren't home. Needless to say, it blistered the wood floor under and near the fridge. We eventually had to remove it and put in tile. It has worked so much better since we are kitchen folks and everyone seems to gather here. Spills and drops happen and with the tile, it's been a better choice for us. All the rest is a mix of tile and wood and we are thinking of adding a few more areas of wood too.

Have fun with all your designing in the new home. I know it will be gorgeous!! Blessings for all to go smoothly!

I have always had wood floors in my kitchen and loved them. They are easy to keep clean and give a warm feeling to the kitchen. Good luck with the packing.

Your move is so exciting, Stacey...so nice to start from scratch and get what you want!
We have tile at the lakehouse and it is very easy care. We have a really good laminate here at home...everyone thinks it's wood and it has been easy to care for, too. It probably just depends on how much use the kitchen gets. Have fun!

This is so funny, because I just posted a very similar post! Congrats!! How fun that you are building your forever home. Yes, I would have wood floors in the kitchen. I have had them for several different houses and never had a problem at all.

Congratulations on selling your home and building! We have hardwood in the kitchen, and I love it. It is beginning to need refinishing after 15 years and lots of use, but I would definitely recommend it!

I am so excited for you. I love that you call gardening your love language. We built three years ago and have loved every minute of it!

Hurray! You're going to love it. And I think I'm jealous of the whole moving next door to a special friend thing. :o) How wonderful it will be.
I think I'd skip the hardwood in the kitchen just so I wouldn't have to worry about it. It sure would look pretty though!

Stacey... congrats on selling your house. I have had tile, slate, and wood floors in the past 25 years and I love wood floors everywhere, including the kitchen. So excited for you building a house. That's something we have always wanted to do. Are you moving next to Jemma?

How exciting, Stacey! I'm so glad your home sold and now you can move on to your dreams. I hear you on wanting more outdoor space. Best wishes during the build!

I have wood floors in the kitchen in the city. I don't think it makes a difference. I have a rug in front of the sink to keep the floor dry.

Have a great week!

Congratulations on the sale of your home, Stacey.
I admire how you have figured out exactly what you want and are now proceeding with those plans. I look forward to seeing it all unfold. I know those gardens will be beautiful!
We built our home 17 years ago with hardwood flooring in the kitchen. I would do it again in a minute. Love them! They rarely look dirty, but when they do get a thorough wash they look so shiny and pretty all these years later. The only mistake we made was not putting a rug under the table from the beginning. After a few years one of the chair legs rubbed the finish off the flooring. It's all hidden under the rug now. :).

Yay, Stacey! So excited for you. Funny what you said about staying until they cart you to the retirement home. My husband says the next time he moves the coroner will be handling it. hahaha!
What a fun time for you!

I can just imagine the trouble you two can get into ;) Is there any land left out there for me?! (how I wish!) So so excited for you, I know your new home will be just beautiful! And two thumbs up from me on hardwoods in the kitchen, I think they are more comfortable to walk on than tile. Mine are sealed and I can mop them up just like any other surface. I do keep a large rug in here though. Can't wait to see more!!! xo!

We have wood floors in our kitchen. Our home is almost 10 years old now and they still look fantastic. They are solid oak stained in cherry finish. They just glow. I'm so glad we did it!

I've had hardwood floors in my kitchen (in 3 different houses) for the last 25 years, and I love them. They are very easy to keep clean and I like continuity with the rest of the floors in the house. That is, we've lived with hardwood floors throughout our homes, so going into the kitchen keeps the continuity going. Highly recommend!

Congratulations on the sale of your house! Your scenario is straight from Jemma's recent move. I'm so happy for you that you're building the house you really want, and having some property is the best! (I'm stuck in town, but the country girl in me hopes to move back to the country before I die.) I've never had wood floors in the kitchen, but apart from cleaning them (would there be a lot of crumbs in those cracks?!), I think wood is easier on your body if you're standing a lot in there. I have had white linoleum for ages in my house and I kind of like it because I can see where the spills are.

Congrats Stacey. How exciting. The packing and moving isn't so much fun. The new adventure will be wonderful. More land to play in the garden.

That was quick! Congratulations! So much moving but it will be so worth it to get the house you will live in forever. YES! I would definitely put a wood floor in the kitchen. I had one actually in my farm house with a big braided rug. Loved it. It really warms the room up and makes the most lived in room of the house more cozy.

I was surprised to learn you sold your home and having another built..I so well remember when you bought 4 yrs ago.
Glad you are getting your forever house on some acreage..you'll have fun there.
I am not one to ask about wood floors...I'm not a fan...whatever you choose, you will love, I'm sure. Good luck on it all....

Yay! Congratulations for selling your house. I know your new house will be stunningly beautiful!
We had wood floors in our kitchen until our pressure valve broke on our house and our kitchen flooded.

Never again.

We replaced the ruined wood floors with limestone and travertine tiles. I love them! The only thing about limestone is that it does pit and some people don't like that look, but if you look at English country homes many of them have limestone floors and they all look pitted.

You are moving next door to Jemma? Oh, my -- are YOUR neighbors ever in for a treat! I wish you'd move next door to me!

So glad all is going well and you are well on your way. As to the wood floor, yes, I would do it in a minute, maybe with a washable area run around some of the spots. I love the warmth of wood floors. I also like tile but they can be hard on the hips if you stand and cook a lot, though not with a comfy rug along the way. The point is, what do YOU love -- because that's all that matters!

So exciting! I have always avoided having a wood floor in the kitchen because of the dangers of water and wood. This house came with a wood floor in the kitchen and it has been fine so far. It can be tricky to have a kitchen that flows into the family room if there are two different types of floor.

Congratulations on selling your house! Our home has been on the market for two summer seasons now with no takers. Guess no one want a huge victorian house built the same year that Abraham Lincoln died :) It will be fun to watch your building adventures. Wooden floors in the kitchen? - absolutely.

Catching up as I've been grandchild sitting all week and when she goes home I'm too tired to sit at my computer--lol

I'm so glad your new house is being built--I hope that means you sold your present home. Good luck with construction and enjoy the process. I think you are wise to plan your home to last until your old age. We did not do that (lots of stairs) and will possibly have to move ourselves one day but I'm not thinking about that ...lol

I do have a wooden floor in my present kitchen. It is easy on the feet/legs but harder to keep clean than my prior house's ceramic tile floor. If I had to do over I'd go back to a rustic tile floor so I could mop it frequently.

Hi Stacey, congrats on selling your home! What exciting plans for the future. I know you will have gorgeous gardens. You always do! As far as wood floor, that's all I would ever have. I've had them in my last two homes and love them. Tile is too cold for me in a kitchen. Looking forward to seeing the progress of your new home. Thanks for sharing with SYC.
