Loving and Caring for Our Backyard Pond

How do I love the pond...let me count the ways.

Y'all this pond is the best! These days we are all so technology driven but nature is really where it's at and a pond brings nature to you. Even in our small backyard the pond has completely changed the environment.  We are hosts to birds, beneficial insects, lizards, and other critters that come in the night.  Many of you have asked about snakes....snakes are certainly a possibility. The key is to be familiar with the snakes in your area and to know that most are harmless and helpful.

The care and maintenance of the pond is minimal. Our pond has a skimmer that pulls water in and catches floating debris, a UV filter system to help control algae growth, then there's the waterfall which oxygenates the water. We have been using a tiny bit of algaecide once per week because our pond is in full sun. Our goal is to cover half of the water surface with plants. The plants help with all aspects of the habitat. We also add water every few days.

With the pond at our last house, we drained a good bit of the water once per year to clean things up and I suspect we will do the same here.  The filters have to be cleaned at that time too.

The fish are like little puppies that come to us now when we walk to the pond.
The frogs are happily living here and sing out loud every night.

If you've ever thought of building a pond as a DIY project, I urge you to give it a try. It's not as hard as it might seem and the joy you get in return is well worth the effort. Thank you to SmartPond for sponsoring this pond project. If you are interested in trying this yourself, the parts can all be purchased at Lowe's.
I'll buy ya a Diet Coke if you'll pin this. :)

Your pond is beautiful, Stacey! I can only imagine how relaxing it is. Some friends of ours also mentioned the frogs, when they built theirs. I guess it just comes with the territory. Your plant life looks amazing. I'm sure you're enjoying it all immensely.

Your pond looks very clean and lovely. Love the blooming flowers. We had ours cleaned a few weeks back and it is already turning green again even though we are putting everything in as prescribed. Who knows. We are cleaning the filter, etc.

Your pond is fantastic Stacey, l especially love the way you've made it look so natural with the use of stone and slate for the edging and also all the plants, how beautiful to have waterlilies blooming. Your fish must be so cute and it looks as though your pooch thinks so too:-)

I love your pond and it's nice to hear about all the creatures that drop by.

Both our front and back yards are havens for bees this year and we are loving the buzz.

What great pics of your backyard pond. It was so neat to follow its installation process. I can feel tired thinking about it but you are much younger than me.LOL!
I loved your post on Jemma's today. Your pics and thoughts are so true and sweet. You have a good heart. I wish we had been able to meet in June. I feel a special bond with y'all.
I'm finding it hard to have enough hours in the day to visit each blogging friend and blog myself. Can't wait for all y'all learn at Haven. Too bad, they don't video the sessions and allow us to purchase since we can't all attend.
Hope you have a good week.

I love ponds and yours is just beautiful, Stacey. The sound of gurgling water, watching the water flow down the waterfall, the fish and wildlife - all good reasons to have a pond. Something very soothing about water, isn't there?

I have loved reading about the mini pond!!! We had one at our old house and I miss it! Would you mind if I ask an approximate cost on this total project? I would love to consider putting one in. Your install post is so informative...thanks!!! :) love the blog, also!

Your pond is so beautiful! We have a pond that came with the house. We've enjoyed it for six years, but now there seems to be a leak in the liner. I would love to add the beautiful rocks you used. They add so much to the beauty of the pond. Thanks for sharing.

Our pond is tiny and does not have a waterfall, there is a frog fountain, but we do have happy fish who come to the surface when they see us and singing frogs! I have to say, I heartily agree, it's a great addition to the yard! Yours is gorgeous!

Stacey,
Your pond is absolutely beautiful! I'm still in love with the plants in your pond! Our pond is right outside our bedroom window and the last few years the frogs sing too. Maybe a little too loud. I so agree with you that it is the best feature that you can put in a backyard.

HI Stacey! Oh, your pond is so pretty and nice. I'm sure it makes your backyard area a very tranquil place to be. Love the comparison of the little fish to puppies! I see your doggy loves the pond too! Thanks for popping in to see me.
Be a sweetie,
Shelia ;)

Stacey, your little pond is just lovely! I agree it brings all kinds of enjoyment and critters when one has a pond. The lilies are gorgeous! Ever since I was a little girl, I have been enamoured by water lilies. We lived by an experimental farm where they had a lily pond and I used to pretend there were fairies flitting about and befriending the frogs. :-) Thanks for sharing and the memories.

Blessings,
Sandi

Your little yard pond is so so sweet! love it. We do fountains and enjoy them so much but have never had a pond. I do so love watching the birds butterflies dragonflies and little lizards scamper and flutter around the water fountains----they are so drawn to the water!

I just love your pond Stacey!! If we end up not putting in a pool at the new house I told hubby I would at least like some type of water feature. I miss not hearing our pool in the evenings.
