Around Here Lately

My goodness it's been a wonderful summer around here.
I didn't mean to take a blogging break but one day it just hit me...and I did. :)

We just celebrated our oldest son's 25th birthday
and the fact that he graduated from college back in December.
He still lives in Oklahoma and we didn't get to be with him on his actual birthday.
So what's a mom to do?
I flooded Facebook with 25 pictures of him.
I was afraid he'd be mad at me but he laughed.

Thank goodness!

I'm continuing to clip flowers from my flower beds.
They are all over the house in jars and pitchers. Love them!
For years I didn't dare cut the flowers and now I can't stop.
The coleus in the little pitcher has grown roots and has been there for
a long time.

I've been having a serious talk with myself about contentment.
I'm a girl many times blessed and lucky but every now and then....
well, I'm sure you understand.

I'll be back soon with a guest post from a friend and
a few projects I've been working on.

Tomorrow I'm off to help my dad unpack boxes in his
new old house.

Strawberry Pound Cake

If you were my neighbor, I'd call you over right now for a piece of Strawberry Pound Cake.
I'd share with you that I just found the recipe at this beautiful website.
Her recipe calls for blackberries but I like strawberries better.

We'd talk about how wonderful the rain has been today.
And we'd marvel at the fact that we've only hit 100 degrees a couple of times.

If you were my neighbor, I'd ask if you'd like coffee with your cake.
I love coffee in the afternoon.
We'd talk about the fact that it's bathing suit season but we don't care!
We want cake.:)

If you were my neighbor, we'd chat the day away.
I'd probably tell you that my dog is so spoiled and she's driving me crazy.

What would you tell me?

Master Bedroom

Our master bedroom needs some TLC.
It's a nice big room with a beautiful ceiling line, wood floors, and a whole wall of windows.

We've had everything in here for years and I'm ready for a change.
Now don't get me wrong, according to my husband they will bury us before we buy new furniture.
That's about the only thing decorating wise that he puts his foot down about. :)

But I sure would love some new bedding and accessories.
It's so hard to pick that stuff out and commit!
Do you agree?

We need a chair or two and maybe a rug.
That's a big maybe - we like the wood floor.

This set at Birch Lane keeps haunting me.
Their ads show it mixed with a little red - which would work for me. :)
What do you think?
This would really be a departure for us but that's probably long overdue.

I found this color clip that was saved to my hard drive.
No idea where it came from but the color combo is pretty.
This could work!

For now I'm clipping roses and looking for inspiration.
What do you think?

Do you have a hard time choosing sometimes?

Summer Lovin' - Fried Green Tomatoes and Cream Peas

There's nothing better than waking up on a summer morning and
heading down to the local farmer's market.
That's what we did yesterday and we found just what we were looking for!

Our mission was to find cream peas.
Do you eat cream peas?
They are tiny little green peas similar to black eyeds but with
a really mild taste.

We found the peas and moved on down the line only to find
the prettiest green tomatoes you've ever seen.
The idea for the perfect summer supper was born!

Fried green tomatoes, cream peas, and corn bread.

I'm not big on frying but these were so worth it.
I used this recipe which was chosen because it included corn meal.
We love the texture the corn meal gives food.

Is your mouth watering yet?
Fortunately, my hubby and I both grew up eating good
home cooking like this.

No gourmet here.
Just great food.

What is the perfect summer supper to you?

The Best $1.59 I Ever Spent!

This morning we woke to the unexpected sound of thunder and rain.
It's rare around here so we were so happy!
I ran outside to take a peek because you know how much nature
loves to be washed off with a good rain shower.

And it was glorious!
Just look at the zinnias that all came from one or two seed packets.
The best $1.59 ever spent!

So a couple of days ago, I bought 5 more packs of them and scattered them about.
They are about an inch tall now.
I can't wait for them to grow big and tall.

I'm just taken with them.
Can you tell?

Happy July 4th to all of you.
We plan to enjoy good food, homemade ice cream and fireworks.
How about you?

On Our Patio

On our patio we rest with a glass of iced tea.
We take a good look around and call it, "surveying".

We seek the shade and wish for rain.

We think about a new table and chairs but reminisce about the 26 years we've had this set.
We appreciate the flowers that grow in the heat and
cuss about something eating the hibiscus and sweet potato vine.

On our patio, we listen to the locusts and tree frogs.
We let some of the stress fade away.

And we remember that we are blessed to have a beautiful home and each other.

Hello Sunshine :)

In the past few days, I've been on the road to and from my Dad's house.
Traveling the interstate highway isn't always the prettiest way to go
but this year there are miles and miles of sunflowers.

It is stunning to look out and see acres of them all leaning towards the sun.

These sunflowers aren't from the roadside.
They are from my husband and son - a gift on my birthday last week.
Today I wanted to share them with you.

By the way, so many nice people have left comments lately that I've been unable to answer.
No reply blogger is so frustrating.
Even if you don't have a blog you might have that setting.
If you haven't heard from me, know that I love your comments.
They make my day!
