Summer Lovin' - Fried Green Tomatoes and Cream Peas

There's nothing better than waking up on a summer morning and
heading down to the local farmer's market.
That's what we did yesterday and we found just what we were looking for!

Our mission was to find cream peas.
Do you eat cream peas?
They are tiny little green peas similar to black eyeds but with
a really mild taste.

We found the peas and moved on down the line only to find
the prettiest green tomatoes you've ever seen.
The idea for the perfect summer supper was born!

Fried green tomatoes, cream peas, and corn bread.

I'm not big on frying but these were so worth it.
I used this recipe which was chosen because it included corn meal.
We love the texture the corn meal gives food.

Is your mouth watering yet?
Fortunately, my hubby and I both grew up eating good
home cooking like this.

No gourmet here.
Just great food.

What is the perfect summer supper to you?

Oh, that looks so good. I had my favorite meal tonight...grilled hamburgers! And I made some potato wedges with sauteed onions to go with them. Sweet hugs, Diane

I love fried green tomatoes! My favorite summer supper is all fresh veggies! One day for supper last week we had stewed potatoes, peas, corn on the cob, squash, okra, cantaloupe, cucumbers and tomatoes along with corn bread! It makes my mouth water just thinking about it!

Fried okra and homegrown tomatoes with sweet tea. I don't need another thing but that.

Yummy! For all the cooking I do, I have never made Fried Green Tomatoes! And have never heard of cream peas, shame on me. I promised Maurie some corn cakes soon, so I'll try the tomatoes too when I make them. Good idea :)
xoxo Andrea
p.s. Pretty plates!

We are about as southern as you get, and I have never heard of that type of peas. But those fried green tomatoes...oh my! I posted a sandwich recipe with FGT just the other day. Stop by and check it out when you have a second. It just doesn't get any better than southern cooking. Gonna check the peas out... we normally do purple hulls.

I have never had cream peas. They sound great. I love fried green tomatoes.

Corn on the cob and a grilled burger is my perfect summer time meal. It will be corn season here in a few more weeks.

YUM and now I want cornbread too :)

I love a plain old tomato sandwich with mayo and salt&pepper. That's my favorite summertime meal, but fresh corn on the cob is a close second. :)

I can't get on board with the peas (I couldn't even feed them to my boys when they were babies because I would gag..never have liked peas..lol!) But, I LOVE tomatoes (in any form) and cornbread is a staple around here. :) I love that you used corn meal in the fried tomatoes too. I also love the texture. Yum!!

Hi Stacey! Oh, that's my kind of eatin'! My mother used to fry up fried green tomatoes. I never could make them as good as she did. How exciting life is about to be! If you come to visit your friend, let me know and I'll meet you somewhere and hug your tiny neck!
Thanks for popping in to see me.
Be a sweetie,
Shelia ;)

I have never heard of cream peas, but I did have fried green tomatoes once when I was a kid. I have to admit I prefer my tomatoes red and sweet, with fresh sweet corn and grilled hot bread spread with pesto :>)

I've only made fried green tomatoes once, but I thought they were awful tasty. Yours looks delish! Good home cookin, is what I grew up on too. My mom fried zucchini with egg and lots of S&P, and butter. YUM! Made some the other night.
hugs,
Jann

Fried green tomatoes are something I've only eaten once, but I was actually thinking about making them the other day after reading a recipe in a magazine. I think if I can find them that's exactly what I'm going to do! Looking at your pics have really got my juices flowing ;).

I'm stopping by for the first time Stacey. Don't know what took me so long! Seems like we have lots in common and many mutual blog buds. You have a lovely, colorful blog and I've enjoyed having a look around!
