The Space Above the Kitchen Cabinets

Yesterday my husband and I were making our second trip to HomeGoods looking for items for my Revamp the Space Above the Kitchen Cabinets
project I've been working on.
My husband follows me faithfully and agrees with most of my finds because he's sweet like that.

Decorating Above the Kitchen Cabinets

The second or third time we circled the store, I overheard a conversation between two girlfriends. They were looking at a unique piece of furniture and one of the girls
was telling the other that she was going to use it for her TV.

Decorating Above the Kitchen Cabinets

Her friend said something like,
"Mmmm girl, I can totally see it."
It just reminded me how much I enjoy my girlfriends.
A girlfriend can see something when you are trying to explain it. Right?
Or she will tell you when you are totally going the wrong direction.
A girlfriend would tell me if I was completely off my rocker trying to add in this
robin's egg blue with my reds.

Decorating Above the Kitchen Cabinets
(Don't worry girls, you can't see the books from the floor.
I might have been standing on something tall.)

My husband - he doesn't always see what I'm trying to do when it comes to decorating.
But he is always supportive and complimentary.
He always moves the ladder around willingly and tells me not to stand on the counters and bar stools.
I do it anyway, of course.

Decorating Above the Kitchen Cabinets

Some days are for shopping with your husband.

Stacey, your cabinet tops look great! Love the blue and red combo. I love shopping with girlfriends, too! It really is fun to bounce ideas off of someone you trust. Hope you can pop over to see me. I've got a surprise.

Love the blue platter and the pretty plate! I was just standing on my counters a few hours ago rearranging the tops of my cabinets AGAIN. :) I kept moving things from the top of the armoire in the living room to the tops of the kitchen cabinets and back again. So much piddling around to be done on a Sunday. :)

I love Cath Kidston, and one of her favorite color combinations is turquoise and red. It's one of my favorites, too. I love the space above your cabinets!

I love it all Stacey. I am right on the verge of major home decor mojo coming my way...I can feel it. You have inspired me further!

I adore light blue and red together! So pretty! My husband would NEVER set foot in a Homegoods store! Ha!
I totally know what you mean about girlfriends just "getting" things! I was in a furniture store yesterday and I was telling the woman sales person that I want use a dresser as a TV stand and she totally got it. Then a man that worked there started chiming in and you could tell he thought I was crazy and he kept trying to show me all the TV stands and I sweetly explained to him that I was going for a different look!

So true! I'm loving that blue color lately, too! It looks great mixed in with your red :)

That color of blue is perfect with red. Your space above the cabinets is looking good. It's hard though isn't it? I think that space is the hardest for me to decorate. I don't want it to look cluttered but I don't want it to look bare either. Currently it's bare because I just can't seem to get inspired.

Your husband sounds super sweet! Gotta love a guy who is down with home accessory shopping! ;) The blue looks so good with the red Stacey and that is coming from a red girl! It really pops up there! This girlfriend thinks you did a great job!

Your pitcher of flowers near the painting works so well, Stacey! The colors in painting just pop out, I like it. You have a very thoughtful & helpful hubby! :)

Oh you cute thing, some days you do just have to stand on your bar stools. Although after having a knee scope a couple years ago I don't have the push up strength that I use to. Now I resort to a small ladder. I have accents of that blue in my kitchen and family room with my reds. It's my favorite color combination. Love your new finds! The paisley plate is to die for! I'm laughing because I have bricks under some of my things to raise them up. I just went to some local home shows last week. There was so much robin egg blue and it was all gorgeous! Sometimes paired with red, sometimes, salmon, and sometimes mustard. Loved it all!
hugs,
Jann

I need you to come to my house and fluff the area above my cabinets. I am short so I tend not to look up that high. That's my excuse anyway. Yours looks pretty.

My daughter mixes red and turquoise fiesta ware...and it looks nice. Sheila

When we remodeled the kitchen in our last house, I made sure to have space for vignettes above the cabinets. I miss that.

Beautiful staging and the aqua pitcher is wonderful.

Aw..loved your post! I also shop with my husband. I don't have any girlfriends I shop with, just my hubby. I use to shop with my sister, but she now lives in heaven so hubby said he would be my sister too. Love that man..
Anyway I love the way you think and hubby sounds so sweet!
I was just at homegoods last week and picked up a few things too. I love your floral picture and along with it how you put the red flowers in the blue vase, so pretty.
Have a sweet day, Elizabeth

That looks so pretty! Love the colors. You put just the right amount of decor up there, imo. At one time in my life I had everything, fake greenery, tea pots, roosters, it was a hot mess up there. Now I just have a few touches.

Yes, sometimes we do have to stand on bar stools. Whatever it takes in the name of decorating, right? I totally love the combination of robins egg blue and red, Stacey. Your hubby sounds like a sweetheart!

Hi Stacey! Oh, your kitchen looks so pretty and I love the space above your cabinets and the pretties on them. I know exactly what you mean about girlfriends and about hubbies! :) Mine always gets worried when I climb. I remind him, I've been short all of my life so I've been climbing all of my life - I'm good.
Be a sweetie,
Shelia :)

Yup shopping with girlfriends is sure fun. I love how simple and pretty you decorated that difficult spot. Hence when I renovated my kitchen, I made my cabinets reach all the way up so I wouldn't have too! hahaha!

It looks really nice and I love that you used the books to lift things to the correct height...makes all the difference. When we moved her I wanted to use nautical things about my cabinets but I've never really found what I wanted...still looking! Wish you were here to shop with me! Hugs!

I really love going to Homegoods with my daughter...she "gets" me and also pushes me to try different things. The red and blue...perfect!! I laughed, I use books to elevate my things up there, too! It looks great, Stacey!

Love what you've done above your cabinets. Wish I had a space like that. Everything looks darling and I really like the dishes in your cabinet. Isn't it fun to have those open spaces in and above the cabinets to do special things with?

Love that blue pitcher! I'm looking to revamp up top of my kitchen cabinets too! Slow, but getting there. It's funny, 40 years ago when we remodeled our kitchen and took out metal cabinets to install wood cabinets we decided to leave the top of the cabinets open and not build a soffit above the cabinets. We were way ahead of our time!

What books? You have a plate elevated with books? :) Just kidding, I do that a lot. I really like the Robin's egg blue and red. I'd never have thought of putting it together, since I don't do a lot of red in the house, but it really is pretty. LOVE the pitcher of flowers, and painting.

That space above the cabinets is always a challenge for me, Stacey. I'm looking forward to seeing how you dress yours up. I'd like to redo mine, but I'm afraid to touch it at this point without a clear vision for it. I think you are off to a good start with the items and colors you have in place.

Sherry @ Thrift My House said...

Everything is so pretty! I love the colors too. I also stand on my bar to decorate the tops of the cabinets... I need to get up there more often to dust... but that is not fun. Thank you so much for stopping by my blog. I followed you by gfc and email. I look forward to hanging out here. I'll definitely be snooping around your blog. :)

I had to laugh about the books. I have that same secret.

sounds like you have a good man there! my husband has never seen the inside of a homegoods.

LOVE! The robins egg blue with the red! Go with it!!! I also love how you repeated the pitcher from your print.... very smart! :)

When it comes to shopping, its either alone or with a girlfriend (this would include my daughter) .... My husband has no patience for it. He feels that if you don't know what you want when you go in the store... you probably don't need it. Gasp! Can you believe that?! :)

Those are some lovely vignettes above the cabinets, and anything any shade of turquoise is just yummy to me! I detest getting up on the really tall ladder, but I do it to decorate above my kitchen cabinets. I also stand on the counters in some places or I would not be able to reach -- I just pull out the clorox wipes, and all is fine!

I just love the colors you're adding to your kitchen! You found some great things at Home Goods and it looks fantastic!

Your story about the two girlfriends was funny -- so true how girls can see what you're doing and the men...well, not so much! lol

Let's go shopping again when my kids go back to school -- maybe we can do Canton sometime! :)

Have a great day!
