Please Give Your Opinion

This is our dining room currently.

We've concentrated on other parts of the house for the last 8 months so she's neglected.

She's naked.

She really doesn't like the white curtains from Pottery Barn.

She wants white slip covered chairs on the ends.

She's the first room you see when you walk in the house!

The curtains have to go....I need color!

My sweet husband said, "Get rid of them!"

Well OK!!

What do you think of this idea?

allthingsfarmer.com

Is it over-used? I still want to keep the toile on the chairs...so tell me your opinion please.

Other ideas:

decorative ladder next to hutch
decorate table and top of hutch
white dishes mixed in with transferware

I love the red and white gingham, Stacey! I think it would definitely add some pizazz to your dining room and would go well with your toile fabric. Yes...and white dishes would be the perfect finishing touch!

Love the new drape idea!! I thing it will look great. Have you considered chair rails?

Hugs!

YES!!! Use the red checked curtains. You can get them at countrycurtains.com. I used to have the yellow ones.

I love the red checks! And I think the chair rail idea is great. You could also put "picture frame" molding under the chair rail. I have that in my dining room and the bottom of the wall under the chair rail is white and then I have a red/burgundy on top. The "picture frame" molding wouldn't be too difficult to do with a miter box. Hope this makes sense. If not email me and I can send you a photo of the walls in my dining room. Good luck!

I love it! Buffalo check is hot right now, and I think will always be a classic choice. You'll get that room whipped into shape!

I love red and white buffalo checks! I bought several yards at Ikea to makeover my curtains in my dining room. I'm going to do half buffalo check half toile panels. Maybe that's something you could do to tie in the toile on the chairs?

Stacey,
I think the buffalo checks would be perfect! And you can never go wrong with toile.:)

Love the idea of checked curtains! I think it would be cute to hang 2-3 transferware plates on each side of the hutch and then semi-fill the hutch with white dishes. You can then leave room for adding seasonal items to the hutch. A faux or real grain sack runner with red stipes on the sides would look pretty on the table and maybe a tray on the table for changing out vignettes.
I look forward to seeing what you come up with!

p.s. I love your idea of the white slip covered chairs at the ends of the table too. I think it would look cute to paint the wood on the side chairs white/off white. The toile fabric would really pop. I would leave everything else in the room dark wood. But I'm partial to painted furniture. It looks fine the way it is too. :)

You really have a nice big room to work with, that alone would make me happy. I found some great curtains at JC Penney. Just a thought. I do love the checked curtains, they have not been overdone at all. People gravitate to florals in dining rooms a bit too much for me. Country Curtains has a lot of checks and stripes. Your idea for the chairs is great. And maybe some plates hung on the wall next to the cabinet?

Have you gathered up any inspiration pictures? You may get ideas that suit your taste and the style of your furniture. It's going to be beautiful, I know.

Jane

Oh Stacey, I hate to be the fly in the ointment here...but if it were me, I would be really bummed out about the fact that I just bought Pottery Barn curtains, which are NOT cheap. So unless you can use them somewhere else, have you thought about stenciling them? I have always loved the curtains Miss Mustard seed has in her dining room (or is it her living room?) and there are so many other really nice patterns out there. You could achieve a really similar look with stencils. Seems like I've seen a bunch of posts from people who stenciled their curtains successfully. That said, if you're not really into that kind of thing, I do think the buffalo checks would look amazing in there. And I love your idea of the slipcovers for the chairs on each end. I've been thinking about making slip covers for our dining room chairs. Funny enough, Miss Mustard also has a post about how she did that too. Whatever you do, I'm sure it will look really nice, and I look forward to seeing what you come up with. :)

I, too, like your checked curtains and white slipcovers ideas ... plus the white dishes mixed with the transferware will really brighten the room. Perhaps you can add a rug under the table and chairs later ... and one or two large tropical plants?

Oh I love each and every idea! I am crazy for Buffalo check in any color. This will look just fantastic with the toile. I cannot wait to see you pull it all together. Go for it!

Hi Stacey, this room has fabulous bones already and beautiful furniture. And I love the wall color and your curtains, your gorgeous chandelier and floors. Maybe you could just add a topper of some sort to the PB curtains in the red buffalo check. Move one dining room chair to a side wall and add a wing chair or painted cream color yard sales chairs to the table with the buffalo check pillows on them. Keep your toile....it's wonderful. And definitely add white dishes to the hutch and use the red and white dishes on the wall or in another yard sale white painted side board of some sort. (sorry I get carried away). But this room is wonderful with so much you can do. Oh...and a cream and some other color patterned flat rug under the table would add more interest and texture. :) P.S. If the hutch is not a valuable piece you could paint that in a light color.

Love your ideas, if it were my room I think I would paint out all the furniture white and change the fabric on those chairs in some cool geometric and white or maybe multicolor with white..I would take the top off the credenze and hang it on the wall and since it would be white, colored dishes in it would be so cool to change out for the seasons...leave the white drapes...you will never get tired of adding color to the beautiful clean crisp white...just love the bare bones of the room, create creat
