Mirror, Mirror

Hallelujah! I'm back on my computer! I'm doing a happy dance here. :)

I just got my afternoon coffee and would love to have a little decorating chat with y'all. You need to see what we just added to our family room...and you can give me any suggestions that you might have.

See the view out this window? It's the beautiful wooded backyard that we love so much. There's one downfall...the trees are large and it's making our family room dark.

Now hold on to that thought while I show you around. This is one view. The TV is in that armoire. Some day we will get a big screen but my frugal husband keeps backing out when we go shopping. I'm not complaining. I love him for his frugal ways.
There's a little peek of my new mirrors.
There! I want you to see what we added to the back wall of the room. My thinking was that the mirrors would reflect the light from the windows and carry the light around the room.

I love the reflection of the outdoors. Mission accomplished!

The geranium picture in that corner used to be on the back wall where the mirrors are. I think we really like this.

Here's a peek at the rug. I love this rug with my heart and soul. :)

Molly does too. Yes, she's very old.

Well, I didn't show you the whole room but I wanted to ask. How do you know when enough is enough in a room? I love the look of homes that are chock full of beautiful things. BUT when I try to add much to a room it makes me feel jittery and nervous like there's too much. It's strange and kind of claustrophobic in my own space. My friend Cindy said she would add plates and other stuff to the walls. She is a fabulous decorator but just the thought of it makes me feel nervous.

Maybe I drink too much coffee! When do you decide to stop decorating?

You know on blogs we can just talk about the most important things. :)

By the way, we got the mirrors from the Ballard Designs catalog.

LOVE the mirrors...I think you were exactly right! I love their design! And I think YOU are your own judge about how much to add in. If it makes you feel uncomfy, then go with what you like. You are the one to live in it, and you want it to be pleasing to you and your family.....so what to whatever everyone else thinks....I think you have lovely taste!!!

Glad you're back...you were missed!

Hi Stacey,
I love your room. Everything is just perfect! I think I usually decorate until it feels cozy to me. Sometimes I go a little overboard, but having all my "froofies" around me makes me calm and happy.

Molly is just the cutest! My doxie, Sid, looks so much like her!

Stop by my blog when you get a chance. Yes, I undeleted it today. Who knew you could do such a thing? I am glad to be back. I missed everyone! Amy :)

I think the mirrors are perfect to get more light in the room. You know, I always say...you asked, so I feel free to answer! Regardless of what designers say...it is OUR home. If you think more "stuff" makes you nervous...I wouldn't do it. I am a stuff person...but my rule of thumb, IF I have one is....I need to have some clear wall space. I don't want every inch of floor or wall filled with something. I think if you have TOO much, nothing looks important. Just my thinkin'! Have a great 4th weekend.

Hi Stacey,
I think your room looks great!...the mirrors really brightened it up. Your home is warm and homey. As far as too much, only you would know. I too love that full look but have a problem achieving it.
Thats half the fun of decorating isn't it?
Glad you're back!

Welcome back!
Stacy I am exactly like you! I do love to accessorize and admire that very "full" look as well.
If I overdo though I feel like it looks it and then I just start cleaning and editing things out left and right.
I think your family room looks perfect. The mirrors look amazing! I adore Ballards. Great choice you made. Oh what I wouln't give for a wooded view in our backyard. We have a lovely view of neighbors and kids toys.
Sigh...next house.....:)

Molly is so precious.

Personally, I wouldn't change a thing in your room...it's gorgeous! Everything flows so beautifully! Those mirrors are very unique and they do exactly as you'd hoped...what a perfect touch!

WOO HOO...SHE'S BAAAACK !! So glad you got your computer up and going!! I know you are, too.

Your living room is beautiful. The idea of the mirrors is just perfect. Bounce that light all around. I did the same with a few mirrors in my living room. One is a large, standing mirror..It is surprising how much light they reflect. You did really good.
As for me...I like what I call 'controlled clutter"..meaning I do like a lot of things around me...not little things..I don't much like little items unless they are a collection, grouped together.
Sometimes, when I walk into a room and if feels overcrowded,I know it's time to go thru and 'weed' out a few things. I tend to get too much on my walls and have to regularly remove something. Just do what makes you comfy and no more...
You are very good at decorating...and I would arm wrestle you for that beautiful rug...but, remember, I'm olden...and weak so I wouldn't win!! :)

I love your living room! It is so pretty, love the colors and patterns you have chosen, everything! I think you are done when the thought of more makes you cringe. I often wonder if we are heading into "old lady tchochke overload". Your living room looks warm and inviting but not cluttered. Why mess with it if your'e happy?

Do what makes YOU comfortable, but be open to adding something, then living with it for a little bit. Your comfort zone will tell you to either take it down or out, or to keep it! What I tell a client is that they'll never know for sure if they'll like something until they try something new or different. They always have the last say. Good luck! :-)Sue

1. I love those mirrors! They are gorgeous and it looks like they do a GREAT job of reflecting light and the trees outside.
2. I am the exact same way about decorating my house! I look at photos I take, and the rooms seem a little bare. But when I go to add more stuff, I feel claustrophobic. So I always go back and forth. I am constantly rearranging things. So I guess I'm no help--just wanted you to know that you are not alone!! :-)

Well, first of all you cannot drink too much coffee...that is impossible. Secondly, I think it is all individual preference. My philosophy is "less is more". I think your room is beautiful, and I think it does not need anything added. But, it is your room and I think it should be just like you want it to be. The mirrors from Ballards Designs look perfect from my point of view. Love the red rug!!

Hi Stacy,

I think this is a very interesting subject because we are all different. I like you see rooms chocked full and think they look nice but I can't breathe in a room like that. I am always editing, in fact I just did again because I like a clean, uncluttered simple look. But that's me....I think if you look at it and still think there is something missing then you need to add something. I myself think the mirrors are beautiful standing all alone but then I don't like too "much" stuff.
I don't know if this helped but I do know that taking pictures of the room and then looking at them also helps me.

Hugs,
LeAnn:)

Hi Stacey,
I'm glad to hear that your computer problems are fixed. I think you have found the perfect solution to your problem. The mirrors are very pretty and look great where you placed them. I am like you about hanging things on the wall. I can go in other people's homes where they have tons of things hanging on the walls and think it looks nice and interesting. I can't seem to do it in my house or it feels like too much clutter.

Thanks for your recent visit and kind comments. It means a lot.

Hi Stacey, so nice to see you back.

You can love something in a friend's home but be uncomfortable with it in yours....that is perfectly understandable.

Your mirrors are lovely and the whole room is great.

Yes.....we can see the lake from the kitchen table. Thanks for coming over.

Love the mirrors!!! The reflection in your mirrors is really beautiful! Love the whole room...I don't think you have showed us this room before...Have you? I agree with your friend about adding the plates..however if "more" makes you feel nervous...then I wouldn't do it! Do what you feel comfortable with..you have to live in it! And, really it looks sooooo beautiful as it is! I am coveting that couch...but you knew I would...It's my style and taste!
Molly is adorable too!

Stacey, I'm So glad you are back!!!! Nancy

So glad you're back! The room looks lovely with it's new mirrors. The pattern and color of the rug is beautiful. I'm a " more the merrier" kind of person so here's what I do. Throw everything I love on the wall, look at it for a few days, then edit if something bothers me. I also keep lots of spackle and touch up paint on hand for all the holes!

Love the mirrors! I think they really help bring in more light. Good idea. Your room is beautiful. Two suggestions - I think bigger lamps would be nice and more greenery...maybe a big pot or basket of greenery on the hearth.

Welcome Back!!!! So glad you are fixed!

Love your room, it is beautiful. I really love your sofa! I want it!! It is so my taste!!

As for when do you know you have too much? I guess it is just what feels right to you! Some houses I go to are so perfect and then some look cluttered. I worry thatI get too cluttered sometimes and I will try and weed out some. BUT then I add back in. Changes all the time!

It is what makes us "unique" :)

Hi Stacey,
The room looks fabulous. The mirrors are perfect and I adore that red rug. Red is one of my favorite colors right now.

If you feel comfortable with how the room looks then that's fine. You could try adding in a few things to see how that feels to you, but it is your home and you are the judge. Some people like lots of things around and some just feel better with less.

Have a great day!

Stacey, SOOOOO glad you are back, and I think those mirrors and your room look fabulous! I've seen those mirrors in Ballards and wished I had a place to use them! They are so great lookin'. You know, I DO have stuff everywhere, and that seems to be the only way I'm comfortable. But when I look at your room, it makes me wish I could make myself get rid of some "stuff". Your room looks beautiful! We all need to live with what makes us feel good! laurie

Your room is lovely and the mirrors work perfect. You have to live with what you're comfortable with. I'm one of those ones that likes all my stuff around me and then I find more stuff I love and add that to it. Probably too much stuff in a room, but that's what makes ME feel good. If something makes me nervous, I would get rid of it.

Your room is beautiful and such a homey space! I think it has just the right amount of "things!" And I know what you mean about how much to add and display. I get jittery and , too, when I start adding too much, but it looks great on other's blogs. Oh well, do what fits you! :) Your room is great!

Have a wonderful 4th! ~hugs, Rhonda

Stacey,

I know just how you feel. My friend Toni's house is chocka block full of stuff and it's beautiful. And when I'm there and we are sitting on the sofa, instead of focusing on Toni, my eyes are drawn to all of her stuff. It's beautiful, don't get me wrong, she has a wonderful eye for detail.

I don't like as much stuff. I only like to use things I love and not a whole lot of it. I get ansy around too much stuff too. When we walk into a space that we love we should look around and take a sigh of appreciation and be able to sit down and relax.

Just my opinion.

Glad you're back up and running.

HI Stacey! I love your room! Those mirrors are gorgeous! They look like leaded glass windows and how smart of you to hang them where they pick up the light on the other side of the room. Your room is so lovely and what a perfect find with the mirror. As a person who has a lot of "stuff" sometimes simple is better. Do what makes you feel comfortable. The beauty about it all is if you don't like it, move it!

Love the mirrors! What a lovely room! I would say that if you don't feel comfortable in a room then you know it's too much. Personally I don't like a lot of stuff every where. My mind and my eye need to be able to rest!

P.S. I have to get one of the plates down and look on the back to see if they have a name on them. I'll let you know.
