What's Wrong Here?

Girls help me!! I got on a mission a few weeks ago to do a little poofing to my dining room and kitchen because I'm having bunko here next week.

I know...silly!!

Well, this is really just freshening not redecorating. Fresh paint, a few things on the wall, moving things around. You know.

Can you help me with my dining room? I admired three platters on the wall in the HGTV give away home. That dining room was also red so I thought this would be perfect. Found my platters at TJ Maxx yesterday for an amazing price.

But something's not right!!

Are they too high? Too stark? Do I need to spread the white around the room more?

Still trying to work with these sconce shelf thingies that I bought last summer. I just can't seem to get it right. The shelves are deep like something should sit on them but they aren't really level. I was going to get rid of the pictures that are on the sconces now but sat them on there yesterday and I kind of like it. I think they are too high though.

Should I possibly put platters there too? I'm afraid that would be too much.

Can you sense my frustration? I'm tired of this project!!

Im sorry Im laughing but you sound just like me getting ready for pokeno. I drive my family crazy when I have these game nights. I wont let them use the hall bath...wear shoes...or eat the goodies. Yeah, I kinda mean like that,ha! They can have all they want after the party, smile. I love what you have done. The plates may be just a bit too high{ maybe beacuse Im only 5'} But it is really hard to tell from my computer. Somtimes I find when things are high it brings some good attention to them... maybe just leave them as is and live with them for a day or two. I wish I was going to your party...sounds like fun!

Here is my thoughts, wll you asked. lol. I think you should put pretty plates like even the one (if you have anothe)r that is on your header on those shelves. Something s with pops of color . With the black mirror and black picture frames , just looks to safe. And I like the white plates, I did see on someones blog where they put a monogram on a plate or a design, that might look good. Love the toile and the color of the walls in your dining room. mishelle

i love your room.. . I like the above idea of a monogram on the middle platter - it will draw the eye more into the center of the display vs. going up to the ceiling.

The only other suggestion would be to get a little craft paint and paint your frames gold to mimic your mirror of gold and then the black mat. Black frame and black mat is not enough of a contrast . .. or if you want to leave the frame black ... cover your mats with some sort of red design scrapbook paper perhaps.

have fun at your party...

I love the platters. I think you might want some white on the other side of the room too, to balance it out. I like someone's idea of plates on those shelves, maybe white with some color? Your woodwork is amazing, white touches all around the room would really highlight it.

Looking good! How about a rectangular mirror? Or lower the shelves. I think you are right about them being to high, of course if you are like me just a 1/16 of an inch drives me crazy! Good luck, it will come together, have fun with it. Mary Ann

I'm being perfectly honest here, but I think everything looks great! I do like the commentor's idea about putting a monongram on the center platter to break up the monotony a bit...not that it's a bad thing! I, also, think it might be wise to leave things as they are for a day or two...your opinion might vary from one day to the next.

I love the idea! Because of the top of the really neat cabinet is in triangle I think I would try to echo that by putting the platters with two on the bottom side by side & center the other over those. Don't know if that will do it or not. Sometimes you have to play with it to get the right combo

Hello...

Just wanted to stop by to say thank you for visiting my little frenchy office and thank you so much for your sweet comments!

Girl, I love your style!!! I also have a red dining room and have displayed a few of my white platters and red transferware on the walls...I love it! I love the red & white toile in your room...it's gorgeous!!! I also like the pictures on the wall shelves...you know, I can see a few pretty plates (maybe 3 red transferware plates) just above the mirror...I would follow the lines of the mirror in hanging the plates. It would carry some of the pretty toile design up onto the wall!

I love the white platters against the red wall...stunning!!! I think it looks great as is, but there again, if you wanted more you could add a few red transferware plates and voila!!!

I am adding you to my "follow list"...sure would like to see what all you come up with! Best wishes and have fun decorating!!!

I love your red walls. I am so a red girl! I like the white platters against the red. Very pretty. I just found your blog and I LOVE it! I will be back. Have fun and good luck finishing your decorating!

Love the red walls. What about hanging the platters in an arch to highlight the arch of the cabinet? The biggest platter on top in the middle, and the other two hung lower on either side. Does that make sense?

And what about spray painting the shelves and the frames white? Just a thought.

I have to tell you, Stacey girl, I laughed out loud when I read that you gotta get all things pretty for Bunko...
Once, a few years, back, daughter Stacy was having the girls over for Bunko...well, everyone always came in thru her garage and back door as her house was brand new and no sidewalks out front yet. So, she wanted it pretty back there. We dug and bought and planted and cussed and laughed our way through the most precious side garden...just beautiful. She must have spent a fortune but I can't remember..Well, as luck would have it, the first to arrive DID go to the front and the rest followed...not one single lady saw that luscious little garden!! NOT ONE....we have laughed ourselves silly over that one!!
Next....I love your white plates..they look fabulous..a monogram would be PERFECT there...
Now on the other wall, I would mix white and red transferware on it, maybe put the little scounces in another area...I am not so good at this kind of thing as it is hard for me to look at a photo and not the whole room...Your red walls are just beautiful. I know whatever you come up wiwth is going to be KNOCK OUT pretty !!

Nothing like a little bunko to get things freshened up...I do the same thing, I think I just work better under pressure!

I am blown away by the red on your walls, just the perfect shade! I love the way the plates pop against it; I'm on the tall side, so I might move them up just a tad, since the piece under them is so tall (or looks that way in the photo). I like the idea of the monogram, too. Your chairs are spectacular, too, btw.

Stacey, I had to smile while I was reading this post this evening. First of all, because it sounds like something that I would be saying and asking. Secondly, because I think your dining room is a gorgeous shade of red! I love the white plates, although I am not sure about the location of them. What a fun room to eat and play games in!

I think the platters are so pretty! I agree with the others - maybe hanging them in arch to compliment the woodwork? Your room is gorgeous. :)

Oh how I love white plates. Before I hang I lay them out in the floor in every imaginable way possible, and figure it out that way. Jackie

What about lowering the sconces a little and then hanging the pictures on the wall above them. You do not actually have to sit anything on them. I LOVE the platters!

squawmama said...

Ok since you have so many good ideas here's what I am thinking... Move the two smaller plates down centered between the molding and the hutch... Then hang the oblong one long ways to the left of the two smaller ones... That is how I would do it.... They are beautiful pieces... I know whatever you do it will be great

Stacey, When I read your title, I came running over, because I thought you were going to advise us about what was wrong with something! When I got a housekeeper, my family accused me of cleaning the house for the housekeeper! I have to have the motivation of knowing someone is coming before I decide to take action and get anything done! I am certain not an authoirty, but I'd love to see something tall (maybe a vase with some branches or something) on top of the china cabinet, on the side that is in the corner and something on the other side (maybe that pretty jar of fruit that is on our table. I think it would kind of "frame" your pretty white plates that are no the wall. I think the little shelves on the "mirror wall" could be a little lower, and I'd love to see a pretty red/white toile plate hung above each shelf to pick up on your beautiful toile upholstery on the chairs. Having said all of that, I think the room looks beautiful just the way it is, and sometimes you do just have to live with something new for a few days before you decide whether or not you like it. Have fun at Bunco. laurie

Stacey, here's my 2 cents...I love the idea of the monogram on the center plater....
Then...I would TRY taking those black pictures off of the shelves...I would try a white small plates on those shelves...but I would hang the plates not prop them on the shelf. I think that would tie in all your white...The black mirror will then "ground" your room.
I have to tell you, I am loving those white platers! I am thinking of lining my hallways with white plates and such...the hallway has always been the area I forget about.
There you have my thoughts...Hope that helps you! I do love your room! It is gorgeous!!!!! nancy

DEAR STACEY,
HOW ARE YOU DOING MY OKLAHOMA FRIEND....THE TEXANS BEAT THE OKLAHOMANS HANDS DOWN BUT THEY ARE GREAT....GREAT....AWESOME WOMEN
I HAVE LOVED READING EVERYTHING THAT EVERYBODY SUGGESTED....IT IS HARD TO TELL BY PICTURES BUT....
1. THE POSITIVE THING IS YOUR MIRROR IS HUNG WHERE IT REFLECTS WHAT IS ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE ROOM
IF YOU CHOOSE TO LEAVE THE THREE WHITE PLATES....THE LADIES THAT SUGGESTED A BLACK LETTER MADE A GOOD SUGGESTION BECAUSE YOU WOULD SEE THE BLACK REFLECT IN THE MIRROR THAT HAS BLACK ON IT
2. TRY STANDING FACING THE MIRROR BUT TO NOT OBSTUCT THE VIEW LOOKING IN THE MIRROR BEHIND YOU AND SEE IF YOU LIKE WHAT YOU SEE
3. I WOULD THINK ABOUT JAZZING UP YOUR CHANDELIER BECAUSE TO ME THAT IS THE CROWN OF THE ROOM....YOU COULD USE TOILE OR RED TO COVER THE LITTLE SHADES AND PLACE A DAINTY GLASS BEADED ACCENT TO HANG FROM THEM...IT WOULD BE GORGEOUS....YOU CAN FIND THE BEADED FRINGE AND GLUE IT ON
4.I WOULD HAVE TO LOOK AT THE PICTURE MORE...IT IS SO BEAUTIFUL BUT SOMETHING JUST ISN'T QUITE RIGHT
DON'T TAKE ANYTHING DOWN UNTIL YOU SET DOWN AND STUDY EACH SIDE
AND THE LADY GAVE WONDERFUL INFORMATION ABOUT PLACING THINGS ON PAPER.........IT TRULY IS A BEAUTIFUL ROOM
BLESSINGS

Stacey, it's a beautiful room, and I would leave everything where it is for now.

Later, you might want to move the shelves down and the pictures up. Then I would put something like a bowl, vase, or plate (play around with this) on the little shelves. Take everything off that wall and play with it on the floor first. That way you won't make any holes you'll have to patch, and you can get a visual on what works for you. But I like the idea of having the bottom of items running parallel with the bottom of the mirror and the same for the top.

I'd have to think about the platters. While they are horizontal, they take your eye pretty far up, and it makes the wall look tall and narrow. It seems to me (and I could be wrong) that you would want to make the wall look wider because it's a narrow wall. Again, just thinking aloud there. I like the white platters, though. They might even look good under or over the little shelves if you decided to leave the pictures on the shelves. Someone had the idea of monogramming one of them, and I like that. Your dining room looks great for Bunko (which I just played last Friday night with some friends... fun game), and it actually looks great period!

XO,

Sheila... who hopes I haven't confused you more!

Stacey,

I did not read any of the other comments, so if I repeat, please forgive me. If I were you (I wish... I love your home!), I would add two red toile plates or some other plates with print and color. One on each side to blance it out and give more interest.

Karol :0)

Karol said...

...BTW: I meant you should add the plates on each side of the three gorgeous platters.

Oh, I love your dining room! It's so gorgeous. Now I like those white plates and the monogram idea for the middle one! If you were to put up some greenery on one side of the top of that cabinet - I think you'd be done!
Have a wonderful time!
Be a sweetie,

Stacey - I think your dining room looks great!!! I'm the same way - every time I have bunco - I go crazy trying to change everything around - making everything look fresh and new. Anyway, having company always makes me get my hinney in gear - hehe. I actually love the three platters - they are very pretty and clean and simple and the contrast against the red is beautiful - I'd leave them as is. Good luck and have lots of fun and thanks for stopping by! Blessings, Cathy

Stacey - its me again. I was reading some of the comments above and a couple of them mentioned a monogram in the middle of the platter. I just did this over the weekend. I have a white platter with black trim - I used my cricut to cut out a bl/wh polka dot "m" and modge podged it right on there. Easy, fun and I like it so much better. Good luck!

Hi Stacey, I believe if you put something on top of your cabinet to the left, with a little height to it , that would balance it out for you. Love those white platters.

And just my 2 cents here; I would take the mirror and sconces down and do that wall in white also.

Melissa Miller said...

Oh Stacey I adore the Red walls!
The room is gorgeous.

The top plate is maybe a "wee" bit high...
Can you group them as a trio more side by side or circle like?

Mary said...

Stacey...I think your house is beautiful...I love your platters, me thinks I need to go to T.J. Maxx!! If I were you I would add some more plates on the sides...smaller ones. It would balance it out. I love the colors you are picking for your walls. I have the same exact colors in my house except the red is in the guest Brm. The butter is in my living rm, dining rm and hall.

No time to read all the comments so someone might of already said this, but here goes.

Miss non-decorator (me) thinks:

The 3 plates on the wall are too high,as you thought. Try moving them down and changing the pattern. Maybe two on the bottom and one above it. Or, you could get really brave and off set them. Stagger then on the wall. Hard to explain. Move the grouping closer together but not even with each other. (that might be hard for you as it seems you like things balance on each side from your pics. If you still think the plates are too much there, put just one. The others will find a home eventually. ;0)
The mirror and sconces look lovely.
I would not add the plates there.

Would you please comment on my blog when you get pics up? I would love to see what you decide, and can't always find people later.

Seriously... WOW that is beautiful!!

Other than that I would just throw some more white around the room and it'll all balance out :)
