Wallpaper? Or Not?

When we built our house in 2000 the first thing I wanted to do was pick out the wallpaper. I went straight to the decorator's shop and started pouring through books and books of wallpaper. I remember not being able to sleep at night because I didn't want to make a mistake.

A friend told me that wallpaper was going out of style (in Oklahoma) and I didn't believe it.

Well guess what....I'm like the only one in Edmond, Oklahoma with wallpaper.

It's true! I'm not just being dramatic here.

Now it's almost 9 years later and I'm thinking it's ok to get rid of some of it. Namely my kitchen wallpaper - it's blinding to me now! When the west sun shines in the windows in the summer you have to wear sunshades. Something about the bright yellow just seems to magnify the heat and it feels much hotter in this room.

What is your current opinion about wallpaper? In or out?

You see, my dad is coming in a few weeks and I'm going to beg and plead with him to help me with this project one way or another. ...or we might just drink coffee and talk about it.

I have not a clue if wallpaper is IN or OUT...I just know how HARD HARD HARD most of it is to remove...I am in the middle of having a fight with the WALLPAPER BORDER FROM HELL and I know I will NEVER put wallpaper on again...EVER!! In fact, in one of my little baths, there is a layer of wallpaper beneath paint...It just would not come off so we painted over it...worked ok.
Whatever you decide to do will look great...your house is so pretty...

I do believe wallpaper is rarely used these days. My husband is a commercial/residential contractor and I have seen a drastic (99%) decrease in using wallpaper. We remodeled last year and I had all of ours removed and will never have wallpaper again. The main reason I dislike it is that it is too much of a committment. It can cost a fortune for quality paper and then hiring a professional to hang it is costly. To justify that much expense you feel you need to keep it for years. I prefer paint any day.

I like your wallpaper, but I do know wallpaper is not used very much anymore. It seems all the model homes I walk through have special paint treatments.
Our house is 10 years old & has wallpaper in all three bathrooms. I want to get rid of it soon, but dread all the hard work. Good luck!

Carol

I have to say that I don't think that wallpaper is a very popular trend much, anymore. In fact, my mother-in-law just took hers down that she's had up for about 10 years and painted the walls a pretty pale blue. Changed the entire look of the room! She used liquid fabric softener to loosen up the paste, then it came off fairly easily. It is a big project any way you look at it.

Hope you have a great weekend!♥

Hey Stacey - I think that with all of the paint colors and faux finishes available, people have steered away from wallpapers. We've become obsessed with change in our houses, and for the most part, Wallpaper will lock you in, unless you want to go through the effort of taking it down. YUCK! I have noticed a resurgence of natural coverings though, and it might be something you could consider. Papers like grasscloth, and linen. They come in a variety of colors, and you'd be surprised with the comfort they add to a room. Large patterns also show up a lot, but I've never been a fan of that. I say, if you don't like it anymore - take it down. Err, pay someone to take it down! LOL! It's a process! ;)

I think if you love it, then keep it, but if you are ready for a change, then take it down. I myself seem to tire of wallpaper very easily, it is just too confining. However,I like it in small doses, like the back of shelves or something. It has been out but it seems to be making a comeback again. Hope that helps.
If it were me, I'd change it. You have lived with it for 9 years...you probably are ready for a change.

Hugs,
LeAnn:)

Hi Stacey! Well, your yellow wallpaper is pretty. I'm old fashioned and like it, but I do know it's not so popular anymore. I do have it in my tiny powder room and just love it. We just had the nasty wallpaper taken down in our story high entry and I'm loving the fact that it's just a nicely painted wall now! Beg your Daddy, bake him a cake, keep the coffee pot on and I'll bet he'll help you! lol
Be a sweetie,

Shelia ;)

It doesn't matter what is in or out, only what makes you happy to be in your home. If you like it let it stay, if not, rip it off!

I'm a fan of wallpaper but if you don't like it get rid of it. Just be sure you wet it really well with a good commercial wallpaper remover and you shouldn't have any problem. I know what ever you decide to do will be great.

I'm not a great fan of it myself. Too busy. (And my knick-knacks are busy enough!) But I read decorating magazines all the time. And it seems to me that wallpaper is back "in" again. I would want the simpler backdrop of paint, however. It's just easier on my eye. But it's different strokes for different folks. So go with your instincts.

Don't be a slave to what's "in" or "out"; if you like it, keep it; if not, rip 'er down. I find it a little busy, but I have some in my guest bath that I'm hesitant to remove simply because of the hassle and mess. I'm taking the lazy way out; just leaving it for a while longer.

Hi Stacey :) Actually wallpaper is making a comeback! You can read about it here:

http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/pardonourdust/2008/05/trend-alert-wal.html

So, if you like it, keep it, but if it bugs you and you want a change take it down. Kari and Kijsa posted about removing it here:

http://kariandkijsa.blogspot.com/2008/09/new-best-friend.html

Anyway, I like it, but it's not my house LOL

Loved the dog bathing story :)

Melissa, I thought wallpaper was coming back "in", but what do I know? Well, I'll tell you what I do know -- I haven't used wallpaper since I had strip some of the wall of a dining room in a house we had moved into! I think "in" or "out", if you love it, you should use it, if you don't you should get rid of it. You have such wonderful taste, I can't imagine that you could go wrong. laurie

Stacey, Wallpaper is mostly out around here...but I do love it in small bathrooms...I don't know why but I do....I don't have any in my house now...but girl, in our other house we lived in for 17 years I redid the wallpaper in it 2 times...the whole 1800 square ft house! Well, I had it done..you know what I mean..I don't like to do it at all. When we moved here I stayed away from. Wish I could put black toile in my powder bath..but my hubby would stroke out...lol :)
I got your check today so I will get your tassel to you soon! Blessings, Nancy

I think that wallpaper is coming back! Borders, too. Not that I would want to put it back up. I just got done removing it from just about every room in the house. I know that Artie suggested grasscloth, but I just removed that from my foyer and powder room walls and it was the pits! Also, it really encloses a space. My rooms really opened up when that came down. ~ Robyn

I'm back I just read your comment over at BJ's about Keifer! Girl, You saw him..from a distance...I would have been arrested, cause...there's no telling what I would have done to that poor man. You know he's not the best looking, but there is just something about him...I don't know. Lucky You! Nancy

That is funny I heard wallpaper is coming back. I f you notice in some of the magazines they are showing walls with Damask or bold print wallpaper. I do know that wall border paper is still out. So leave it, change it or paint it. Options, options , options. mishelle

Just stopping by and thought I'd leave a comment, hope you don't mind.

Although I love wallpaper, I don't have any in my home. I'm afraid it has gone by the wayside for the time being. I had every wall covered with wallpaper in my old home and I loved it but when we moved to our present home 11 years ago I just had everything freshly painted. Two toned walls seem be the thing these days. Slightly darker walls with light baseboards. I've done mine this way and I love it.

It is the funniest thing, this wallpaper issue. Everytime that I walk through my dining room into my kitchen, I think to myself, "I must get rid of that wallpaper." Then I remember that my sister-in-law just told me what a pain it was to remove. With that in mind, I choose to focus on other lists of things to do in my life. Today, you reminded me again. It is only one of two wallpapered rooms in the house. At this point, I've chosen to ignore the whole thing. I wish you the best.

It seems that paint and faux finishes are the way most people in this area seem to go. However, I have heard that wallpaper is making a comeback. And, if it isn't yet we can bet it will be soon. You know how those trends go. I would definitely say you should keep it if you like it and not worry about the trends.

It looks very pretty to me.

Hi Stacey...I personally like wallpaper if it's not too garish or loud...but then again I guess that's subject to interpretation
...LOL Like BJ said...I've had to paint over some wallpaper & it can be done if you follow certain procedures. ;-) Bo

I think wallpaper is really pretty, but I do think it locks you in to one look for a long time, since it's sooo hard to change. lol I think yours is really pretty, though, and if you want to keep it that is all that matters! :)

Thanks for visiting my blog and your comment. I was unable to see the problem on my post, but hints by comments enlightened me. :-)
In the 70's - 90's, I hung and rehung wallpaper in my home. I now have only painted walls.
However, my favorite room of all times was a miniature floral with a dolls at a tea party border. The bedroom had a wrought iron bed with a chenille bedspread and gingham bedskirt and curtains.
Do what you like...fashion and decor is circular ...what was old becomes new. :-)

When we moved into our house it had wallpaper in 2 rooms. I was a pain to remove. I would not do wallpaper again only because its so easy to paint when you want a change.

I used to be crazy about wallpaper too. In fact, in our last home, I had wallpaper hung in practically every room. In our new home, we have none at all. Wallpaper has run its course and has gone out of style now.

Have a great weekend friend!

I have wall paper in my kitchen. I happen to Like wall paper. I think it should be a personal preferance rather than 'in style or out'. Sounds like you are tired of your old wall paper though. Maybe it's time for a change. Hope you have a great weekend! Twyla

Hi Stacey,
I guess it sort of matters what style of house you have and your personal preference. Our first house was built in the early 1900s and the walls weren't really that smooth and nice so wallpaper really hid that fact. Also it went really well with the style of the older house. My problem is that I am always, always changing my mind as regard to color and style of my rooms. It is easier to change paint colors than change wallpaper! I'll be interested to see what you decide. Amy :)

I will confess, I haven't read all the comments prior to mine .. but I think there are so many new and very unique wall coverings on the market now you could have the best of both worlds. There is a paper you can actually paint that will give wonderful texture to your kitchen walls, grass cloth, I think there is also a paper made from bamboo ... just let your imagination run wild, drink gobs of coffee with Dad - and go for it!

We removed some wallpaper in our house that was put up by the builder and they hadn't prepped the wall correctly, so it pulled down drywall and made a huge mess! I like wallpaper if it's a neutral, classic pattern. Ours was not! I think for most people, it's "out" right now, but who cares? I say do what you like!

I think wallpaper is making a comeback. I love wallpaper. It is hard to take off but it is so pretty. Like a fancy dress. I am looking for wallpaper for our bedroom. I know what I want but can't find it.

HHHMMMM I heard that it is coming back. But I don't know that I would ever do wallpaper again... It is a pain to deal with. I happen to like the look of it but as you said... you do get tired of it. What looked great to you 9 years ago, is now tiresome after living with it.

Sorry, I don't think I helped much. I like your wallpaper if that helps at all, but you have to live with it... :)

When we built this house almost 3 years ago, I didn't do any wallpaper. I had wallpaper everywhere and I do mean EVERYwhere in my previous house. We even painted over some of it.

If dear old dad is game, I would try to remove it and paint. I think you will love the change!
